When is the best time to visit Bali?

In short: April to October, during the dry season: in Kuta, rainfall drops from 181 mm in April to 57 mm in August, with 27 to 29 °C in the afternoon. May, June and September are the best compromise, dry and less busy than July and August, while the rainy season, from November to March, stays hot and very green.

  • Rice terraces and volcanoes: From April to October, the dry season: walks through the rice terraces of Jatiluwih and Tegallalang, and the sunrise climb of Mount Batur under more often clear skies.
  • Diving and boat trips: From May to October, when rainfall stays below 110 mm a month in Kuta: crossings to Nusa Penida, diving at Amed and on the Tulamben wreck.
  • Surfing at Uluwatu: Consistent waves for much of the year on the Bukit Peninsula; the dry season, from April to October, adds kinder skies.
  • Nyepi, the Day of Silence: Usually in March: the airport closes for 24 hours, the island switches off, and the evening before, giant ogoh-ogoh figures parade before being burnt.
  • Gentler heat: In July and August, the coolest months: 27 °C in the afternoon and 23 °C at night in Kuta, against 29 °C the rest of the year.

Best avoided: January and February, at the heart of the rainy season: 309 and 339 mm in Kuta, the highest totals of the year, with almost daily downpours.
