Hilton Head Island
Hilton Head Island, in a few days
A shoe-shaped island 19 km long, at the southern tip of South Carolina, where homes hide beneath the pines and oaks, where no sign rises above the treetops and where people get around by bike on a network of paths and along the beach at low tide. Behind the golf courses and marinas, alligator marshes and Gullah villages tell another story, that of the South's first freedmen.

Day by day
Day 1
- Morning · Harbour Town and its lighthouse · 2 to 3 hThe Sea Pines marina built around a red-and-white striped lighthouse from 1970, whose 114 steps lead to views over Calibogue Sound, beside the golf course of the RBC Heritage tournament.
- Afternoon · Sea Pines Forest Preserve · about 2 hA 245-hectare preserve of pines, oaks, marshes and ponds crossed by trails and boardwalks, with basking alligators, nesting herons and a 4,000-year-old Native American shell ring.
Day 2
- Morning · Coligny Beach free · half a dayThe island's busiest public beach, with fine, firm sand stretching as far as the eye can see, compact enough at low tide to cycle for kilometres, and Coligny Plaza just behind.
- Late afternoon · Shelter Cove free · 2 to 3 hA marina on Broad Creek, where bottlenose dolphins hunt in the marshes, and the starting point for dolphin-watching trips, sunset cruises and kayak or paddleboard hire, with waterfront restaurants.
Day 3
- Morning · Coastal Discovery Museum free · about 2 hA Smithsonian-affiliated museum on the former Honey Horn plantation, tracing Hilton Head's natural and human history, with a salt-marsh boardwalk, centuries-old oaks and a butterfly garden.
- Afternoon · Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge free · 2 to 3 hA 1,640-hectare refuge of islands, salt marshes and forest crossed by dirt trails for walkers and cyclists, leading to ponds where hundreds of ibises, egrets and herons nest in spring.
- Late afternoon · Mitchelville Freedom Park free · about 1 hThe site of Mitchelville, founded in 1862 as the first town in the country governed by former slaves, with compulsory schooling, recalled by panels and metal outlines of vanished houses.
Day 4
- Morning · Old Town Bluffton free · 2 to 3 hOn a bluff above the oyster-rich May River, shady streets of art galleries and 19th-century houses, the waterside Church of the Cross from 1857 and oysters still shucked by hand.

Flavours & local habits
🍽️ Worth tasting
- Burgers and barbecue: brisket and ribs cooked low and slow, done differently in every state.
- Clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl: the classic lunch on the San Francisco waterfront.
- Mexican food: tacos from a truck in Los Angeles, a Mission burrito in San Francisco.
- Pancakes and weekend brunch: a national habit, generous to the point of excess.
- Craft beer, and California wine from Napa and Sonoma.
⚠️ Best avoided
- Tipping is not optional: add 15 to 20% in restaurants and bars.
- Prices on menus and in shops exclude sales tax, which is added at the till.
- Do not plan more than four or five hours of driving a day: the distances are larger than they look on the map.
- Never travel without health insurance. A night in hospital can cost thousands of dollars.
- In summer, do not hike down into the Grand Canyon in the heat of the day: the climb back out is where people get into trouble.
