Hilton Head Island
A shoe-shaped island 19 km long, at the southern tip of South Carolina, where homes hide beneath the pines and oaks, where no sign rises above the treetops and where people get around by bike on a network of paths and along the beach at low tide. Behind the golf courses and marinas, alligator marshes and Gullah villages tell another story, that of the South's first freedmen.

Day 1

The Sea Pines marina built around a red-and-white striped lighthouse from 1970, whose 114 steps lead to views over Calibogue Sound, beside the golf course of the RBC Heritage tournament.
💡 Sea Pines is a private estate: car entry is paid at the gate, and day visitors cannot enter by bike. Climb the lighthouse in the late afternoon, then have dinner at the harbour at sunset. Price: gate $10, about €9, per car per day; lighthouse $8, about €7, free up to age 5.

A 245-hectare preserve of pines, oaks, marshes and ponds crossed by trails and boardwalks, with basking alligators, nesting herons and a 4,000-year-old Native American shell ring.
💡 Come early in the morning, when the light is soft and the animals active, and never feed the alligators: it is illegal and dangerous. Horseback, wagon and boat rides are offered on reservation. Price: included in the Sea Pines gate fee, $10, about €9, per car.

The island's busiest public beach, with fine, firm sand stretching as far as the eye can see, compact enough at low tide to cycle for kilometres, and Coligny Plaza just behind.
💡 The Coligny car park is the only one of the municipal beach parks that remains free, and it is full by 10am in summer: come early or by bike. Check the tide times to ride on the beach, as the strip of firm sand is wide from two hours before to two hours after low tide. Price: free.

A marina on Broad Creek, where bottlenose dolphins hunt in the marshes, and the starting point for dolphin-watching trips, sunset cruises and kayak or paddleboard hire, with waterfront restaurants.
💡 Book a guided kayak trip early in the morning or at the end of the day, when the dolphins are most active and the water calmest. Price: marina free; boat or kayak trips charged, depending on the operator.
Day 3

A Smithsonian-affiliated museum on the former Honey Horn plantation, tracing Hilton Head's natural and human history, with a salt-marsh boardwalk, centuries-old oaks and a butterfly garden.
💡 The museum opens from 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday and from 11am to 4.30pm on Sundays. Sign up for one of the guided tours, on Gullah culture, birds or the marshes, which are charged, unlike admission. Price: free entry, donations welcome.

A 1,640-hectare refuge of islands, salt marshes and forest crossed by dirt trails for walkers and cyclists, leading to ponds where hundreds of ibises, egrets and herons nest in spring.
💡 The first pond, Ibis Pond, is about 3 km round trip from the car park: come at sunrise, with water, sun cream and repellent, as mosquitoes are plentiful. Dogs are banned and cars stay in the car park. Price: free.

The site of Mitchelville, founded in 1862 as the first town in the country governed by former slaves, with compulsory schooling, recalled by panels and metal outlines of vanished houses.
💡 The park opens every day from 6am to 9pm; take the self-guided tour with the panels, or book a guided tour. Carry on to neighbouring Fish Haul beach, at low tide, for its sandbanks and birds. Price: self-guided visit free.

On a bluff above the oyster-rich May River, shady streets of art galleries and 19th-century houses, the waterside Church of the Cross from 1857 and oysters still shucked by hand.
💡 Come in the late afternoon for the light on the May River from the churchyard, then dine on local oysters, from September to April, the harvest season. The farmers' market is held on Thursdays. Price: walk free.

🍽️ Must-try food
Burgers and barbecue

brisket and ribs cooked low and slow, done differently in every state.
Clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl

the classic lunch on the San Francisco waterfront.
Mexican food

tacos from a truck in Los Angeles, a Mission burrito in San Francisco.
Pancakes and weekend brunch

a national habit, generous to the point of excess.
Craft beer, and California wine from Napa and Sonoma.

Dishes to look for in the good places: Hilton Head Island.
⚠️ Best avoided
- Tipping is not optional: add 15 to 20% in restaurants and bars.
- Prices on menus and in shops exclude sales tax, which is added at the till.
- Do not plan more than four or five hours of driving a day: the distances are larger than they look on the map.
- Never travel without health insurance. A night in hospital can cost thousands of dollars.
- In summer, do not hike down into the Grand Canyon in the heat of the day: the climb back out is where people get into trouble.
