Grand Teton and Jackson Hole
The Teton Range shoots up 2,000 metres above the Jackson Hole valley without any foothills, to the 4,199-metre Grand Teton, above a line of glacial lakes and the Snake River. Moose, bison, elk and bears can be watched from the park road, and the small town of Jackson, to the south, keeps its wooden boardwalks and its elk antler arches.

Day 1

A 3 km glacial lake at the foot of the peaks, crossed by shuttle boat to the 30-metre Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point, gateway to the moose-filled valley of Cascade Canyon.
💡 Take the first boat, around 7am, or walk the outward leg along the south shore, 4 km, to avoid the midday queue, and come back by boat. The visitor centre car park is full from 9am in summer. Price: shuttle about $20 return per adult, or €17, on top of park entry, $35 per vehicle, about €30, and $100 per non-resident visitor aged 16 and over, about €86.

Backwaters and beaver dams beside the Snake River whose still water reflects the whole Teton Range, with a flat trail upstream and beavers at dawn and dusk.
💡 Arrive half an hour before sunrise, as the car park is small and photographers crowd in during summer. Stay on the trail, as the banks are fragile. Price: included in park entry.
Day 2

An easy 4.8 km return walk through sagebrush and a pine forest regrowing since the 1985 fire, to a cold lake at the foot of the Grand Teton, ideal with children.
💡 It is the ideal first-day hike or one to do with children. Set off before 9am, as the car park fills fast, and carry bear spray, as grizzlies and black bears frequent the area. Price: included in park entry.

A line of wooden homesteads built by Mormon settlers from the 1890s, where the T. A. Moulton barn against the Tetons is one of the most photographed images in the American West.
💡 Come at sunrise, when the pink light strikes the peaks behind the barn, then carry on along Antelope Flats Road for the bison. The road is closed to cars in winter. Price: included in park entry.

A refuge created in 1912 on the edge of Jackson, where often more than 5,000 elk gather each winter, viewed from horse-drawn sleighs from mid-December to early April.
💡 In winter, book the sleigh ride at the Jackson Hole and Greater Yellowstone visitor centre, at the northern entrance to town. The refuge's dirt road can be driven for free to watch bighorn sheep and elk. Price: free, sleigh ride extra.
Day 3

From Teton Village, the tram climbs 1,262 metres in 12 minutes to the 3,185-metre summit of Rendezvous Mountain, with valley views, high trails and the famous waffles of Corbet's Cabin.
💡 The tram runs in summer from mid-May to early October, from 9am to 5pm. Buy your ticket online, cheaper than at the ticket office, and go up on a clear morning, before the storms. Bring a jacket, as it is 10 to 15°C colder than at the bottom. Price: varies by date, to be booked on the resort's website.

A narrow 8 km road winds up a wooded butte in the middle of the valley to two overlooks taking in the Teton Range, Jackson Lake and the meandering Snake River.
💡 The road is off limits to RVs and trailers, and closed in winter. Drive up an hour before sunset and come down carefully, as animals cross at nightfall. Price: included in park entry.

A slow bend of the Snake River where Mount Moran is mirrored in the calm morning water, with moose, otters, beavers, pelicans and bald eagles, and golden aspens in autumn.
💡 Be there at dawn, before the wind breaks up the reflection, with binoculars for the moose. Stay 25 metres from moose and 100 metres from bears and wolves, as the park requires. Price: included in park entry.

🍽️ Must-try food
Burgers and barbecue

brisket and ribs cooked low and slow, done differently in every state.
Clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl

the classic lunch on the San Francisco waterfront.
Mexican food

tacos from a truck in Los Angeles, a Mission burrito in San Francisco.
Pancakes and weekend brunch

a national habit, generous to the point of excess.
Craft beer, and California wine from Napa and Sonoma.

Dishes to look for in the good places: Grand Teton and Jackson Hole.
⚠️ Best avoided
- Tipping is not optional: add 15 to 20% in restaurants and bars.
- Prices on menus and in shops exclude sales tax, which is added at the till.
- Do not plan more than four or five hours of driving a day: the distances are larger than they look on the map.
- Never travel without health insurance. A night in hospital can cost thousands of dollars.
- In summer, do not hike down into the Grand Canyon in the heat of the day: the climb back out is where people get into trouble.
