Seceda
Seceda, in a few days
A grassy ridge tilted like a ramp, which stops dead at 2,519 metres and drops in a single wall towards Val di Funes. It is one of the few mountain shapes people recognise without a caption. No road goes up: take two lifts from Ortisei, or walk for about four hours.

Day by day
Day 1
- Morning · The Seceda ridge free · about 1 hFive minutes from the top station, the ridge runs for about a kilometre: gentle grass on one side, a sheer drop to Val di Funes.
- Afternoon · Baita Sofie · about 1 hThe hut closest to the top, ten minutes below the station, with a wooden terrace facing Sassolungo and the Sella group, away from the crowds.
Day 2
- Morning · Rifugio Fermeda · about 1 h 30A family-run hut at 2,111 metres, about 45 minutes' steady descent towards Santa Cristina, with cows around and a short menu of Ladin dishes.
- Afternoon · Walk down to Col Raiser · half a dayCross the plateau east via Pieralongia, Mastlé and Baita Troier to the Col Raiser station at 2,106 metres, whose gondola goes down to Santa Cristina.
Day 3
- Morning · Rifugio Firenze and the Puez-Odle park · half a dayAlso called Regensburger Hütte, this hut at 2,040 metres is the gateway to the Puez-Odle nature park: simpler and much quieter than the ridge huts.
- Afternoon · The Pieralongia rocks free · 2 to 3 hTwo lone dolomite towers rising from the pasture at 2,285 metres, an easy hour's walk from the station and far less crowded than the ridge.
Day 4
- Morning · Walking up via Furnes free · half a dayThe free alternative to the lifts: about 1,250 metres of ascent over 8 to 9 km from Ortisei, with Furnes as a halfway stop.
- Afternoon · Ortisei to Seceda cable car · about 30 minTwo stages: a gondola from Ortisei (1,236 m) to Furnes (1,730 m), then a cable car to the top station, five minutes below the ridge.

Flavours & local habits
🍽️ Worth tasting
- Neapolitan pizza: soft dough, wood fire, and best eaten in Naples.
- Regional pasta: carbonara in Rome, ragu in Bologna, and never the same twice.
- Gelato: artisan ice cream. Walk past the tubs piled high and glowing.
- Aperitivo: a spritz and small plates at the end of the afternoon.
- Espresso: standing at the bar, and no cappuccino after a meal.
⚠️ Best avoided
- Restaurants with photo menus and a man outside waving you in, especially near the monuments.
- Check the bill for coperto and service before you add anything.
- Cappuccino after midday marks you out. An espresso works at any hour.
- Shoulders and knees covered in churches, and that includes the big ones.
