Savannah
Laid out in 1733 around a grid of oak-shaded squares, Savannah has kept 22 of its original squares, linked by streets of Victorian houses where Spanish moss hangs down to the pavements. Spared by Sherman's army in 1864, the city is explored on foot, drink in hand, between its cotton wharves on the river, its romantic cemeteries and the beaches of Tybee Island, 30 minutes away.

Things to do in Savannah in 4 days
Day 1

The city's great park, 12 hectares of paths lined with moss-draped live oaks, crowned by its white fountain of 1858, with a Saturday farmers' market and spring concerts.
💡 Enter from the north, on the Gaston Street side, to arrive straight at the fountain, and come early in the morning for a photo without crowds, or in the late afternoon when the light slips under the oaks. Price: free.

Twenty-two of the 24 squares laid out by James Oglethorpe in 1733 survive, from Johnson Square, the oldest, to Monterey Square and the Mercer-Williams House, each with statues, benches and oaks.
💡 Walk down Bull Street from north to south, from the gold-domed City Hall to Forsyth Park: it crosses five squares in 1.6 km. Make a detour via Lafayette Square, one street to the east, in front of the cathedral. Price: free; the cathedral can be visited freely outside services.
Day 2

A Regency house completed in 1819 on Oglethorpe Square, whose guided tour begins in the slave quarters, with their original haint blue ceiling, and tells the house's story from their side.
💡 The three-site ticket, valid for seven days, includes the guided tour of the house and entry to the other two museums. Price: $30 for an adult, about €26.

The ballast-stone quay on the Savannah River, lined with 19th-century cotton warehouses turned into bars, restaurants and praline shops, with the iron walkways of Factors Walk above.
💡 The free Savannah Belles ferry crosses the river to Hutchinson Island for the view of the quays. To the west, the Plant Riverside District has turned a former power station into a complex of bars and restaurants. The stone stairs are slippery and very steep, so use the handrails. Price: free.

A 40-hectare cemetery on a former plantation by the Wilmington River, where Victorian tombs fade beneath avenues of oaks and moss, made famous by John Berendt's book in 1994.
💡 The gates open from 8am to 5pm, and the keepers usher visitors out on time: arrive before 3.30pm. The visitor centre hands out a map of notable graves at weekends, and the historical society offers a free tour on the second weekend of the month. Price: free.
Day 3

The estate of colonist Noble Jones on the Isle of Hope, entered along a 2.4 km avenue of 400 live oaks, leading to the tabby ruins of a 1740s fortified house.
💡 The avenue can be driven at walking pace or done on foot; for a photo without cars, come at opening time, 9am. The site closes at 4.45pm. Price: $12 for an adult, plus tax, about €10.

An 1847 brick fort ringed by a moat at the mouth of the river, breached in 1862 by Union rifled cannon, whose impacts still scar the south-east wall.
💡 The fort is on the road to Tybee, so combine the two on the same day. Only bank cards are accepted at the entrance, and the non-resident surcharge for the eleven major parks does not apply here. Price: $10 per person aged 16 and over, about €9, valid for seven days.
Day 4

Savannah's beach island, 29 km away across the salt marshes, with five kilometres of Atlantic sand, a pier, houses on stilts and a lighthouse climbed via 178 steps.
💡 Parking is paid almost everywhere on the island, by meter or app, and spaces fill up quickly on summer weekends. The lighthouse is closed on Tuesdays and sells its tickets only on site. Price: beach free, lighthouse $14 for an adult, about €12.

🍽️ Must-try food
Burgers and barbecue

brisket and ribs cooked low and slow, done differently in every state.
Clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl

the classic lunch on the San Francisco waterfront.
Mexican food

tacos from a truck in Los Angeles, a Mission burrito in San Francisco.
Pancakes and weekend brunch

a national habit, generous to the point of excess.
Craft beer, and California wine from Napa and Sonoma.

Dishes to look for in the good places: Savannah.
⚠️ Best avoided
- Tipping is not optional: add 15 to 20% in restaurants and bars.
- Prices on menus and in shops exclude sales tax, which is added at the till.
- Do not plan more than four or five hours of driving a day: the distances are larger than they look on the map.
- Never travel without health insurance. A night in hospital can cost thousands of dollars.
- In summer, do not hike down into the Grand Canyon in the heat of the day: the climb back out is where people get into trouble.
