The itinerary, stop by stop

May, June and September: everything is open, with fewer people. In July and August, book Lascaux IV and Padirac, and expect the pedestrianised streets of Sarlat and Rocamadour. In winter, Padirac closes from All Saints' Day to Easter and Lascaux IV from early January to early February.

    • Château de Bourdeilles A 13th-century fortress and a 16th-century Renaissance palace, side by side.
    • Brantôme Abbey Founded in 769; an 11th-century Romanesque bell tower built on the rock.
    • Grotte du Jugement Dernier Bas-reliefs carved into the abbey cliff, among the former troglodyte cells.

    The D706 along the Vézère via Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère and Les Eyzies, then the D703 along the Dordogne.

    • La Roque Saint-Christophe A cliff one kilometre long and 80 m high, hollowed out with about a hundred shelters.
    • National Museum of Prehistory In Les Eyzies, in the Château de Tayac, below the statue of Primitive Man.
    • Château de Beynac A fortress on the cliff above the village. €12.50 per adult, open all year.
    • Château de Castelnaud Beynac's rival on the opposite bank, a museum of medieval warfare. €13.60.

    • La Roque-Gageac One of the Plus Beaux Villages de France, set against the cliff; a troglodyte fort above.
    • Domme A bastide town from 1281; the Barre viewpoint stands 100 m above the river.
    • Sarlat old town France's first protected historic district (Malraux law, 1964), about 65 listed monuments.

How much does a one-week road trip in the Dordogne cost?

About €60 of petrol at September 2026 prices for about 350 km. Adult entry: Lascaux IV €23, Padirac €20 to €24, Beynac €12.50, Castelnaud and Marqueyssac €24.50 on a combined ticket. Parking in Rocamadour €6 to €16. Hiring in Bergerac, about €190 a week in November, €315 in July.

Where can you park in Sarlat?

On the boulevards around the old town: the first hour is free all year if you enter your number plate at the pay machine, and it's free from 13:00 to 14:00. These boulevards are free from 16 November to 31 March. Avenue Gambetta, rue de la République and Grande Rigaudie are charged all year. Overstay: €30.

Do you need to book Lascaux IV and the Gouffre de Padirac?

Yes, in summer. At Padirac, tickets are sold online only and booking is compulsory in summer. At Lascaux IV, tickets are timed: arrive 20 minutes early and allow for the walk from the free car park. Type the full address into the satnav, not just "Lascaux".

When is the best time for a road trip in the Dordogne?

May, June and September: sites open, roads and car parks less busy. In July and August, Rocamadour old town is closed to cars from 11:00 to 18:30 and Sarlat's rue de la République becomes pedestrianised. Padirac closes from All Saints' Day to Easter, Lascaux IV from early January to early February.
