The itinerary, stop by stop

May, June, September and October: the sea is warm enough to swim, with fewer traffic jams and full car parks than in July and August. In summer, the Calanques and Esterel massifs may close depending on the fire risk; winter is mild but the sea is cold.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for a road trip on the French Riviera?

A week is enough for the coast from Marseille to Menton: 7 stages and 8 nights, with two nights in Nice. In 6 days, sleep in Cassis, Saint-Tropez, Cannes and then two nights in Nice, and do Èze and Menton as day trips. Drives are short but slow: corniches, villages and summer traffic jams.

How much does a one-week road trip on the French Riviera cost?

For car hire, allow around €330 for 8 days in July at Marseille Airport (€41 a day), €185 in January (€23). Budget around €50 of petrol at September 2026 prices for about 350 km. Add the A50, the La Turbie toll barrier and, for the return to Marseille, €25.20 on the A8.

Do you need a Crit'Air sticker for Marseille and Nice?

For Marseille, yes: the central low emission zone bans Crit'Air 4, 5 and unclassified vehicles 24 hours a day, and requires the sticker on all others; fine of €68. In Nice, the zone no longer applies to cars since April 2025. The sticker costs €3.85 on certificat-air.gouv.fr, the only official website.

How can you avoid the Saint-Tropez traffic jams?

No motorway leads to the village and in summer the access roads are jammed. Arrive early in the morning, or park in Sainte-Maxime or Port Grimaud and take the Bateaux Verts: €9 one way, €16 return. A Zou bus also serves Pampelonne and Gassin from May to September.

Can you drive the Route des Crêtes?

Yes, along 15 km between Cassis and La Ciotat, except on Sundays: since 2024, it has been reserved for pedestrians and cyclists from 00:00 to midnight, with a shuttle from Les Gorguettes. It also closes in high winds and, from 1 June to 30 September, on days of red fire risk.

When is the best time for a road trip on the French Riviera?

May, June, September and early October: the sea is warm enough to swim, car parks are less full and roads flow better than in July and August. In summer, check every evening around 17:00 whether the Calanques or the Esterel are open: a red fire risk closes the trails and the Route des Crêtes.
