Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for a road trip in Spain?

Allow 15 to 21 days for this loop of 10 stages and 16 nights: Madrid, Segovia, Toledo, Mérida, Seville, Granada, Cartagena, Valencia, Barcelona and Zaragoza. In 11 days, drop Barcelona and Zaragoza and head back from Valencia to Madrid on the A-3. To explore Andalusia in detail, see our dedicated road trip.

How much does a three-week road trip in Spain cost?

Small car hire: about €24 a day on average at Madrid-Barajas (Kayak), so nearly €400 for 16 days, excluding zero-excess insurance. The loop covers about 2,700 km: about €370 of petrol at September 2026 prices, at 7 l/100 km. The route is toll-free; add parking and entry fees (Alhambra €22.27, Sagrada Família €26).

Are motorways tolled in Spain?

Less and less. The autovías (A-) are free, and both the Mediterranean AP-7 and the AP-2 to Zaragoza became free in 2020 and 2021. On this route, only the alternatives are still tolled: the AP-6 and AP-61 towards Segovia (€5.65 to San Rafael), the coastal AP-7 between Cartagena and Alicante (€5.70 to €10.20), and the C-32 via Sitges.

Can you drive into Madrid and Barcelona?

Yes with a recent hire car with a C or ECO label: it can drive throughout Madrid's low emission zone, but the Distrito Centro only admits ECO and 0, except to reach a public car park. In Barcelona, the low emission zone applies on weekdays from 07:00 to 20:00, and a foreign-registered car must be registered in advance. Typical fine: €200.

Do you need an International Driving Permit to drive in Spain?

Not with a valid European Union licence. Other licences: check whether an International Driving Permit is required. You can drive from age 18, but rental companies ask for more: at Hertz, 19 for some categories, with a €31.76 fee a day up to age 24. Bring a credit card in the driver's name.

Can you do a road trip in Spain in summer?

Yes, if you adapt your pace: the average July high reaches 36°C in Seville (AEMET normals). Drive early, sightsee in the morning and evening, and keep the afternoons for the coast, in Cartagena, Valencia or Barcelona. Spring and autumn remain the most pleasant seasons for this route.
