Frequently asked questions
When does the Chamonix ski area open?
Partial opening possible from 28 November 2026 depending on snow conditions. Les Grands Montets opens on 5 December, Brévent-Flégère and Balme on 12 December, Les Houches on 19 December. The season ends on 2 May 2027 at Les Grands Montets.
Are the Chamonix ski areas linked?
No, except Brévent and Flégère. You need to take the bus or the train to get to Les Grands Montets, Balme or Les Houches. The Chamonix Le Pass lift pass includes buses from Chamonix to Vallorcine.
How much does a lift pass cost in Chamonix?
Chamonix Le Pass costs €76.50 for an adult day and €373 for 6 days in high season (19 December to 9 April), versus €61.20 a day at the start and end of the season. Mont-Blanc Unlimited costs €104 a day and €499 for 6 days. Bought online a few days ahead, the pass costs less.
Is Chamonix suitable for beginners?
Yes, in the valley: Le Savoy and Les Planards in Chamonix, Les Chosalets in Argentière, Le Tourchet in Les Houches. Higher up, there is a beginner area at Planpraz and at La Flégère. The large ski area remains geared mainly to advanced skiers (28 red runs, 14 black).
Can you get to Chamonix without a car?
Yes. From Paris, allow about 6h30 by train with a change at Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet for the Mont-Blanc Express train. In the valley, the Chamonix Mobilité buses and the train serve Les Houches, Les Praz, Argentière and Vallorcine.
Can you ski the Vallée Blanche?
It is a glacier off-piste descent of about 20 km and 2,800 m of vertical drop from the Aiguille du Midi. It is done with a guide, as the tourist office presents it; the cable car ride up must be booked. The Mont-Blanc Unlimited pass includes the Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix Le Pass does not.
