Rochefort and the Charente Estuary in 4 days

Rochefort began as a decision on paper: in 1666 Colbert put a royal naval dockyard on a bend of the Charente, deep enough for warships and far enough from the sea to be safe. The 374-metre Corderie Royale survives from it, and the estuary around adds forts, islands and a walled salt town. Note that the frigate Hermione is no longer moored here; she went to dry dock in Bayonne in 2021.
