Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for a road trip in the American West?

Three weeks for the big loop from San Francisco: 20 nights, twelve stages, about 3,600 km, rarely more than four to five hours' driving a day. With 14 days, drop the coast and Los Angeles and loop through the parks between San Francisco and Las Vegas. With under ten days, choose between California and the canyons.

What is the best time for a road trip in the American West?

Mid-May to June and September to mid-October. Tioga Pass, between Death Valley and Yosemite, is usually open from late May or June until November (15 May in 2026). In July, the average daily high reaches 47°C in Death Valley, and the park advises against walking at low elevation after 10:00.

Is the America the Beautiful pass worth it for foreign visitors?

Yes, from the first park for two people. Since 1 January 2026, Yosemite, Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyon charge $100 per non-resident aged 16 and over, plus $35 per vehicle: $235 per park for a couple, $970 over the loop. The non-resident pass ($250) covers everything except the Navajo sites and Horseshoe Bend.

Do you need a 4x4 for a road trip in the American West?

No: every stage of this loop is paved, and a saloon or SUV is enough. In any case, rental contracts forbid unpaved roads and damage on a dirt track is not covered. For the 17-mile track in Monument Valley, take a Navajo guided tour.

Can you drive in the United States with an EU licence?

Yes, for a tourist stay under ESTA: an EU licence is tolerated, and California accepts a valid foreign licence from age 18. An International Driving Permit is still strongly recommended; apply for it in the country that issued your licence, well before departure.

How much does a three-week road trip in the American West cost?

Excluding flights and accommodation: $900 to $1,800 for car hire (Kayak, September 2026), $450 to $500 of fuel at September 2026 prices for 3,600 km at 9 l/100 km, and $250 for the parks pass. Add the Navajo fees ($10 per person at Monument Valley, $15 plus the tour at Antelope Canyon) and parking.
