Carcassonne in 4 days
Carcassonne is two towns split by the River Aude: a fortress of 52 towers on its hill, rebuilt by Viollet-le-Duc, and a 13th-century grid-plan bastide that few visitors bother to cross. The first gets around two million visitors a year; the second has the covered market, shady terraces and normal prices.

The plan, day by day
Day 1
- Morning
The medieval Citéfree · half a dayThree kilometres of walls, 52 towers and two rings of ramparts, as much the work of Viollet-le-Duc from 1853 as of the 13th century.
- Late afternoon

- Late afternoon
Pont Vieuxfree · about 30 minAn early 14th-century stone bridge over the Aude, pedestrian-only since 1990, with the best view of the fortress on its hill above the river.
Day 3
- Morning
Bastide Saint-Louisfree · about 1 h 30A street grid centred on Place Carnot and its Neptune fountain; peek into old merchants' courtyards and end at the free Fine Arts museum.
- Afternoon
The Canal du Midi portfree · about 1 hWatch a boat work through the lock beside the basin, gates closing and water dropping, then rest on a shaded bench among the hire boats.
Day 4
- Morning
Lac de la Cavayèrefree · half a dayA man-made lake in the hills under seven kilometres from the centre, with three beaches, shaded picnic spots, a treetop course and a six-kilometre loop.
