Yunnan,
stop by stop.

Between 1,900 and 3,400 m, Yunnan lines up the grey tiled roofs of Lijiang, the flooded Hani terraces of Yuanyang and the gorge where the Yangtze runs between two peaks of more than 5,000 m. Twenty-five minorities, Friday markets and a fast train between Kunming, Dali and Lijiang.

Erhai Lake by bike
A lake of 250 km2, 40 km long, between the Cangshan mountains to the west and the hills to the east, at an altitude of 1,970 m. A 129 km cycle route has circled it since 2021, the west shore flat and lined with fields, the east shore hillier. Xizhou, 18 km north of Dali, keeps its Bai courtyard mansions and its morning market; Shuanglang, opposite, has turned into a holiday resort. The cormorant fishermen, once a daily sight, now only go out for visitors, and garlic crops have replaced some of the rice paddies.
Shaxi and its Friday market
The last intact staging post on the Tea Horse Road, Shaxi centres on a cobbled square, Sideng, lined by an 18th-century theatre and the Xingjiao temple with its 15th-century Buddhist frescoes. The Bai village was restored from 2001 with ETH Zurich, without the souvenir shops of Lijiang. Every Friday, Yi and Bai farmers come down from the mountains to sell mushrooms, pork and fabrics. About ten kilometres away, the Shibaoshan grottoes hold sculptures from the Nanzhao kingdom.

Altitude of the stops

The route changes altitude markedly from one stop to the next: from 923 m to 3 282 m. So you know in advance where you'll feel short of breath, and where you won't notice a thing.

Altitudes measured at each stop (Open-Meteo, Copernicus terrain model). Above 2 500 m, the body starts to feel the lack of oxygen: these stops are flagged. If in doubt, talk to your doctor before you leave.

  • Carry your hotel's address written in Chinese characters for taxi drivers.
  • Stay away from political topics in conversation.
