May to October; June and September avoid the worst of the crowds. In summer, the Lakes of Covadonga are reached by bus (from 1 June to 18 October in 2026) and the Cathedrals Beach must be booked from July to September. In winter the days are short, and the Fuente Dé cable car closes on very windy days and for maintenance in January.

Frequently asked questions

How many days for a road trip in northern Spain?

Allow 10 to 14 days for this loop of 9 stages and 13 nights from San Sebastián: the Basque Country, Cantabria, the Picos de Europa, Asturias, Galicia, then back via León and Burgos. With 7 days, stop at the Picos de Europa before heading back on the A-8. Galicia alone needs three or four more days.

How much does a two-week road trip in northern Spain cost?

In your own car: about €200 of fuel at September 2026 prices for some 1,600 km (€2 a litre), up to €31 of tolls in the Basque Country (nothing on the national roads), plus the Fuente Dé cable car (€30) and the lakes bus (€9). If you hire, add about €510 in August (€39 a day) or €195 in February.

Do you need to register a foreign car to enter San Sebastián or Bilbao?

Yes. In San Sebastián, any foreign number plate must apply online for authorisation before entering the low-emission zone in the centre (1.2 km², monitored by cameras 24 hours a day); the car must have been registered in 2006 or later. Without authorisation: €200 fine. In Bilbao, foreign cars register on the ZBE Bilbao app.

Can you drive up to the Lakes of Covadonga?

Not in high season. In 2026, the CO-4 road is closed to cars from 1 June to 18 October, at Easter, on weekends in May and over some long weekends. Park in Cangas de Onís or in one of the four car parks along the road (€3 a day) and take the bus up: €9 per adult, to be booked online.

Are motorways tolled in northern Spain?

Mainly in the Basque Country: the AP-8 between Bilbao and San Sebastián costs €13.81 by car and the AP-1 from Vitoria €16.87, but the N-I remains free for cars. West of Bilbao, the A-8 is free all the way to Galicia, as are the A-6 and A-231. On this route, only the AP-71 between Astorga and León is tolled, with the N-120 running alongside.

Is the V-16 beacon compulsory for a foreign car in Spain?

No. Since 1 January 2026, it replaces the warning triangles in cars registered in Spain, and therefore in hire cars. A foreign-registered car remains legal with its two triangles and a high-visibility vest kept inside the passenger compartment; forgetting the vest costs €90.
