Tampa

A port city on the Gulf of Mexico where Cuban, Spanish and Italian cigar makers built a whole district of brick factories at the end of the 19th century, and where a hotel with silver minarets recalls the arrival of the railway. A 4 km promenade follows the river from one museum to the next, and in winter, manatees crowd by the dozen into the warm waters of a power station on the bay.

Best avoided if possible: January and July to August (less pleasant weather or big crowds).

Temperatures and rainfall: 1991-2020 normals from the Tampa Airport station, NOAA data (public domain).

Humid subtropical: a mild, dry winter around 22°C by day, a hot, muggy summer at 33°C with a thunderstorm almost every afternoon from June to September, and a hurricane season from 1 June to 30 November. The best time to visit Tampa is March, April, May, October and November, with temperatures reaching 33°C (July-August). By contrast, January, February, June, July, August, September and December are generally less favourable (less pleasant weather or big crowds, depending on the destination), though a trip is still possible with a bit of planning. In high season, book early: prices and visitor numbers climb fast.

Go against the flow. To avoid the crowds without sacrificing too much on the weather, aim for February, June, September and December: the crowds thin out, prices drop too, and the climate stays pleasant.

Why go to Tampa?

Tampa is a Gulf Coast city that owes everything to tobacco and the railway. In 1884, Henry B. Plant extended his line here and built the port; in 1886, Vicente Martinez Ybor set up his cigar factories, and within a few years the small town became the world capital of the hand-rolled cigar, populated by Cubans, Spaniards and Italians. Ybor City still has the brick streets, the clubs of each community and a cuisine unique to the city, including the Cuban sandwich with salami.

Today's city lives by the water. The Riverwalk runs along the Hillsborough River for 4 km between museums, parks and food halls, Bayshore Boulevard lines the bay with one of the longest continuous pavements in the country, and the port district, around the aquarium, has filled up with restaurants and new towers. Visitors find a human-scale city, cheaper than Miami, with a real programme for families, from Busch Gardens to the aquarium.

Finally, Tampa serves as a base for the Gulf Coast. St. Petersburg and its Dalí museum are 35 minutes away, the white sand beaches of St. Pete Beach and Clearwater 40 minutes, and in winter the warm waters of the bay draw manatees to the city's doorstep. Orlando is only 1 hour 30 by road, which lets you combine theme parks and the Gulf in the same week.

Safety in Tampa: should you be worried?

Tampa is safe for visitors downtown, along the Riverwalk, in Hyde Park and in the port district. Ybor City is lively and patrolled in the evening, but the weekend bar crowds attract fights and thefts: stay in well-lit streets and take a rideshare back. Leave nothing on view in cars, as break-ins are the most common crime. In summer, the humid heat and afternoon storms mean drinking plenty and taking shelter at the first clap of thunder: the Tampa area is one of the most lightning-struck in the United States. The hurricane season runs from June to November, and the shallow bay is exposed to storm surges: follow the county's evacuation orders if a hurricane approaches. Lakes and rivers are home to alligators, so swim only in designated places. Insurance covering medical care in the United States is essential.

Downtown Tampa stretches between the Hillsborough River and the port. The Riverwalk links Curtis Hixon Park, the art museum, the children's museum and the Tampa Theatre, one street from the river. Across the water, the minarets of the Plant Museum tower over the University of Tampa campus. To the north, Armature Works, a former streetcar depot, houses a food hall and riverside terraces, in the heart of the fast-changing Tampa Heights district.

Ybor City

The cigar makers' district, 3 km east of downtown, lines up brick factories, wrought-iron balconies, Cuban, Spanish and Italian mutual aid clubs and the Columbia Restaurant of 1905 along 7th Avenue, with its azulejo-decorated dining rooms and flamenco shows. The Ybor City Museum State Park, in a former bakery, tells the story of the immigrants and presents a worker's cottage. In the evening, the same avenue becomes the bar street, very lively at weekends. The TECO Line streetcar links it to downtown.

Channel District and the port

The port district, south-east of downtown, brings together the Florida Aquarium, the cruise terminal and Sparkman Wharf, a hall of converted shipping containers turned into restaurants and bars facing the water. The new towers of Water Street have created a pedestrian neighbourhood there with hotels and restaurants. The TECO Line streetcar runs through it, and water taxis leave for the Riverwalk. In the evening, the lawns of Sparkman Wharf host concerts and giant screens on game days.

Hyde Park and Bayshore Boulevard

South-west of downtown, Hyde Park is the city's most elegant residential district, with its early 20th-century houses under the oaks and Hyde Park Village, a small open-air shopping centre. Bayshore Boulevard borders it on the bay side, with a balustrade and a pavement of more than 7 km where joggers and cyclists file past at sunrise. SoHo, on South Howard Avenue, is packed with fashionable bars and restaurants.

St. Petersburg and the Gulf beaches

Across the bay, St. Petersburg brings together the Dalí museum, a waterfront of parks and marinas, the St. Pete Pier and hundreds of murals in the central neighbourhoods. To the west, the white sand beaches of St. Pete Beach, with the large pink Don CeSar hotel, and Fort De Soto Park, with its wild beaches and its fort of 1898, are 45 minutes from Tampa. Clearwater Beach, to the north, is the busiest, with its pier and sunsets.

Nature around the bay

The Manatee Viewing Center at Apollo Beach welcomes manatees from November to April. To the north-east, Hillsborough River State Park offers trails and canoeing on a dark river between cypresses and oaks, with rapids, a rarity in Florida. Weedon Island Preserve, on the St. Petersburg shore, can be explored by kayak through mangrove tunnels. Alligators live in all the region's freshwater streams: keep your distance.

How many days, and which itinerary in Tampa?

Two days are enough for the Riverwalk, Ybor City, the Plant Museum and the aquarium. Four days add Busch Gardens, the Dalí museum and a Gulf beach. A week lets you combine Tampa with St. Petersburg, the beaches of Clearwater and Sarasota, or with Orlando for the parks.

The weekend (2 days)

Day 1: the Riverwalk in the morning from the port to Curtis Hixon Park, the Plant Museum in the early afternoon, Armature Works for a drink, then a film at the Tampa Theatre. Day 2: the Florida Aquarium at opening time, lunch at Sparkman Wharf, the TECO Line streetcar to Ybor City for the cigar factories and the museum, dinner at the Columbia Restaurant and an evening on 7th Avenue.

City, park and Gulf (5 days)

The two weekend days, then a full day at Busch Gardens, a day in St. Petersburg for the Dalí museum in the morning and the waterfront in the afternoon, with a sunset on St. Pete Beach, and a final day of your choice: the manatees at Apollo Beach from November to April, or kayaking in the Weedon Island mangroves and a walk along Bayshore Boulevard. A car is needed from the third day.

The Gulf Coast (10 days)

Three nights in Tampa, two nights in St. Petersburg or St. Pete Beach for the Dalí museum, Fort De Soto and the beaches, then south over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge to Sarasota, two nights, for the Ringling museum and the beaches of Siesta Key, and finally two nights in Naples or Sanibel, before heading back up to Tampa or crossing the Everglades to Miami. Allow 500 km to Naples.

How to get to Tampa and get around?

From Europe, British Airways flies non-stop to Tampa from London; there is no non-stop flight from Paris, so allow 11 to 13 hours with a connection in New York, Atlanta, Charlotte or London. Another option is to fly into Orlando, linked non-stop to Paris by Air France, 1 h 30 away by road. Tampa International Airport is 10 km west of downtown, 15 minutes by car.

Downtown, the port and Ybor City can be explored without a car: the historic TECO Line streetcar links them for free, water taxis run along the Riverwalk and the port, and on-demand electric shuttles circulate downtown. Bike share stations are plentiful along the river.

HART buses serve the city, but slowly and infrequently. For Busch Gardens, the Manatee Viewing Center, St. Petersburg and the beaches, a hire car, €40-70 a day, is by far the most practical option.

The bridges across the bay to St. Petersburg and Clearwater are congested at rush hour, and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, towards Sarasota, has electronic tolls, billed by the hire company. Parking is paid downtown and in Ybor City, often by app or in multi-storey car parks.

Where to stay in Tampa?

Downtown and the Water Street district, near the port, bring together the recent hotels and the big chains at €150-280 a night, within walking distance of the Riverwalk, the aquarium and the streetcar. It is the best choice for a stay without a car.

Ybor City has a few characterful hotels in former factories and chain hotels, at €130-220 a night, ideal for evenings on 7th Avenue, noisier at weekends.

Westshore, near the airport, and the Busch Gardens area line up the cheapest chain hotels, at €100-160 a night, with free parking and a car essential. Hyde Park and SoHo have few hotels but pleasant restaurants.

For the beach, many travellers stay in St. Pete Beach or Clearwater Beach and come to Tampa for the day. Prices rise from February to April and during major sporting events, and drop in summer. Taxes add about 13.5% to rooms, sometimes plus resort fees.

What to eat in Tampa?

The Tampa Cuban sandwich, Cuban bread, roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard and a slice of Genoa salami, a legacy of the Italian cigar makers, is the local speciality, served pressed for $10-15, about €9-13. Deviled crabs, spicy crab croquettes, and the morning café con leche complete the Ybor City tradition.

The Columbia Restaurant, in Ybor City since 1905, serves Spanish and Cuban food, paella and the '1905' salad prepared at the table, in azulejo-decorated dining rooms, with a flamenco show on some evenings. Bern's Steak House, in SoHo, is the city's other institution, with one of the largest wine cellars in the country.

The food halls of Armature Works and Sparkman Wharf, as well as the Seminole Heights district to the north, gather the city's new cooking, from tacos to seafood, for $15-30, about €13-26. Gulf grouper, fried or grilled in a sandwich, is eaten everywhere by the water.

Craft beer is a point of local pride: Cigar City Brewing, born in Tampa, and dozens of other breweries can be visited. Allow $7-10, about €6-9, for a pint. A tip of 18 to 22% is expected in restaurants, and tap water is drinkable.

Which kind of traveller is it for?

Tampa lends itself to a cultural, festive and relaxing trip. Whether you travel with family, as a couple or even solo, everyone finds their own pace. For accommodation, you will mostly find classic hotels, boutique hotels and resorts.
