Charlotte

The second-largest banking centre in the United States has raised its glass towers at the crossroads of Trade and Tryon, but around downtown it keeps neighbourhoods of former textile mills turned into breweries, galleries and music venues. People come for motor racing, of which the region is the cradle, museums of art and African American history, and an artificial whitewater river where you can go rafting twenty minutes from the skyscrapers.

Best avoided if possible: December to February and July (less pleasant weather or big crowds).

Temperatures and rainfall: 1991-2020 normals from the Charlotte Douglas Airport station, NOAA data (public domain).

Humid subtropical: hot, muggy summers around 32°C with afternoon thunderstorms, cool winters around 11°C by day and often freezing at night, about 1,100 mm of rain spread over the year, and rare snow. The best time to visit Charlotte is April, May, September and October, with temperatures reaching 31-32°C (July). By contrast, January, February, March, June, July, August, November and December are generally less favourable (less pleasant weather or big crowds, depending on the destination), though a trip is still possible with a bit of planning. In high season, book early: prices and visitor numbers climb fast.

Go against the flow. To avoid the crowds without sacrificing too much on the weather, aim for March, June and November: the crowds thin out, prices drop too, and the climate stays pleasant.

Why go to Charlotte?

Charlotte is one of the cities that has grown the most in the South-East in a generation: more than 900,000 inhabitants, bank headquarters, including Bank of America, and a downtown, called Uptown, bristling with towers. The crossroads of Trade and Tryon, where two Native American trails met, is still the heart of the city, with its four statues representing commerce, transport, industry and the future. The city is named after Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, hence its nickname of the Queen City.

It is also the capital of American motor racing: most NASCAR teams have their workshops in the region, the Charlotte circuit, in Concord, hosts some of the biggest races on the calendar, and the NASCAR museum downtown tells the story of this passion born on the dirt tracks of the South. Even if you are not a car fan, the atmosphere of a race weekend is an experience.

Finally, Charlotte is lived neighbourhood by neighbourhood: South End and its breweries, NoDa and its galleries, Plaza Midwood and its bars, Dilworth and its houses with porches. Natural spaces are close at hand, from the whitewater river of the Whitewater Center to Lake Norman and the summits of Crowders Mountain, and the Blue Ridge Mountains begin two hours' drive away, which makes the city a good gateway to western North Carolina.

Safety in Charlotte: should you be worried?

Charlotte is a fairly safe city for visitors in the areas they go to: Uptown, South End, NoDa, Dilworth and SouthPark are lively and well watched. As in any big American city, thefts from parked cars are common, so leave nothing visible, and downtown empties in the evening outside events. Take a ride-hailing car home late at night rather than walking through deserted areas, and stay alert around some light rail stations at night. At the Whitewater Center, follow the guides' instructions, as the white water is powerful. In summer, the humid heat often exceeds 32°C, so drink plenty on hikes. Spring storms can come with tornado warnings. Health insurance covering the United States is essential.

To the north, Lake Norman, the largest artificial lake in North Carolina, surrounds Mooresville, nicknamed Race City USA for its team workshops, some of which can be visited. The Blue Ridge Mountains

Two hours' drive to the west, the North Carolina mountains lend themselves to a day trip or an extension of your stay: Blowing Rock and the Blue Ridge Parkway, the waterfalls of the Brevard area or the city of Asheville, further on. Autumn, from mid-October to early November, brings the finest colours in the South-East. A car is essential.

How many days, and which itinerary in Charlotte?

Two days are enough for Uptown, its museums and a neighbourhood such as South End or NoDa. Three or four days let you add the Whitewater Center, Crowders Mountain and Concord, or a day in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The essentials (2 days)

Day 1: Uptown on foot, the crossroads of Trade and Tryon, the Mint Museum, the Gantt Center and the Bechtler with the combined pass, dinner in South End after a stroll along the Rail Trail. Day 2: the NASCAR museum in the morning, Optimist Hall for lunch, afternoon and evening in NoDa between galleries and concerts.

City and outdoors (4 days)

The two days of the essentials, then a day at the Whitewater Center, rafting in the morning and climbing or mountain biking in the afternoon, with a concert in the evening, and a day to the west: the Daniel Stowe Conservancy in the morning, a hike at Crowders Mountain in the afternoon. A car is needed for these two days.

Charlotte and the mountains (1 week)

Three days in Charlotte, then the road west: two nights in Blowing Rock or Boone for the Blue Ridge Parkway and its overlooks, two nights in Asheville for its breweries and the Biltmore estate, returning to Charlotte via Interstate 40 and Lake Norman. Allow 600 km and a hire car.

How to get to Charlotte and get around?

From Europe, American Airlines, for which Charlotte is one of the main hubs, flies non-stop from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Charlotte during the summer season, in about 9 h 30. The rest of the year, you have to connect through New York, Philadelphia or Atlanta, for 12 to 14 hours of travel. The airport is 11 km west of Uptown.

The CATS transport network includes the Blue Line light rail, which crosses the city from south to north-east via Uptown, South End and NoDa, buses and a streetcar line downtown. A ride costs $2.20, about €2, and a one-day pass $6.60, about €6. No train serves the airport: expect $20-30 by ride-hailing to downtown.

For the Whitewater Center, Crowders Mountain, Concord or Lake Norman, a car becomes necessary, €40-70 a day. The I-77 and I-85 motorways and the I-485 ring road are busy at rush hour and on race days in Concord.

Uptown, South End and NoDa can be explored on foot, and the greenway network, including the Little Sugar Creek greenway, links several neighbourhoods by bike. Shared bikes and e-scooters fill in for short distances.

Where to stay in Charlotte?

Uptown concentrates chain hotels and large business hotels, at €130-280 a night, often cheaper at weekends, once the business travellers have left. It is the most practical base without a car, with the light rail to South End and NoDa.

A few characterful hotels stand out: the Dunhill, a 1929 hotel on Tryon Street, the Grand Bohemian and its artworks, or the Kimpton Tryon Park, near Romare Bearden Park, from €200 to €350 a night.

SouthPark, 15 minutes to the south, brings together upmarket hotels and a luxury shopping centre, and Ballantyne, further out, a large hotel with golf and spa. Hotels by the airport and the motorways, at €80-130, suit a night passing through by car.

On race weekends in Concord, Panthers game weekends or big conventions, prices double and hotels fill up months ahead: check the calendar before booking.

What to eat in Charlotte?

North Carolina is split between two barbecues: in the east, whole hog with a vinegar and chilli sauce, in the west, pork shoulder with a vinegar and tomato sauce, known as Lexington style. Charlotte, in between, serves both styles with slaw and hushpuppies, fried cornmeal balls, for $15-25 a plate.

The city is the birthplace of Bojangles, a fried chicken and biscuit chain founded in Charlotte in 1977, and the region drinks Cheerwine, a cherry soda from Salisbury, 70 km away. Pimento cheese, a spicy cheese spread, goes on everything, and breakfast biscuits are eaten with sausage and white gravy.

Optimist Hall, north of Uptown, brings together around twenty counters in an 1892 mill, and South End, Plaza Midwood and NoDa concentrate the most inventive restaurants, from reinvented Southern cooking to Vietnamese and Mexican tables, $20-40 a main course.

Charlotte has dozens of craft breweries, especially in South End and NoDa, where you drink at the bar or on terraces with food trucks. A tip of 18 to 22% is expected in restaurants, $1-2 per drink at the bar.

Which kind of traveller is it for?

Charlotte lends itself to an active, cultural and festive trip. Whether you travel with friends, with family or even solo, everyone finds their own pace. For accommodation, you will mostly find classic hotels and boutique hotels.
