Why go to the Écrins (Vallouise)?
The Pays des Écrins is the upper Durance valley around L'Argentière-la-Bessée and the valleys that feed into it: the Vallouise, which climbs towards Mont Pelvoux, Freissinières and the Fournel. People come here to enter the Écrins National Park by its most direct gateway, that of the Glacier Blanc and Ailefroide, the second-ranking mountaineering site in France according to the tourist office. The area also suits families, with via ferratas from age 4, a medieval mine and high-altitude lakes.
Summer is the main season, from late June to mid-September, when the mountain huts are staffed and the valley roads are open. Winter is more low-key: two human-scale resorts, Puy-Saint-Vincent and Pelvoux-Vallouise, cross-country trails in the valley and, at L'Argentière, the frozen waterfalls that draw climbers from across Europe for the Ice Climbing Écrins festival.
One piece of news matters for 2026: the heavy rain of 28 August damaged roads and trails. The road to the Pré de Madame Carle, washed away, remains closed to cars and its future is under review; the via ferrata in the Ailefroide gorges and some routes are closed. The tourist office publishes an update page to check before every outing.

| Premium | €180 and up per day | boutique hotel, a guided outing on the Glacier Blanc or an introduction to mountaineering, rafting, a multi-day ski pass in winter. Upmarket hotels are limited locally. |
Cash machines are mainly in L'Argentière-la-Bessée and Vallouise; in Ailefroide there is almost no mobile signal, so withdraw cash before heading up. Mountain huts increasingly take cards, but keep some cash in reserve.
Is the Écrins (Vallouise) safe?
The Pays des Écrins is high-mountain country. Beyond the Glacier Blanc hut, the glacier must be crossed roped up with mountaineering gear, ideally with a guide from the Bureau des Guides des Écrins; never walk alone on the ice. The heavy rain of 28 August 2026 showed how violent the torrents can be: check the tourist office's Floods page, respect closures and do not cross collapsed sections. Summer storms often break in the afternoon, so set off early. On via ferratas, check your lanyards and helmet and always keep two points of attachment. In the core zone of the national park, dogs, fires and camping outside the rules are forbidden. In winter, ice climbing and off-piste skiing require professional supervision. Emergency number: 112.

Glacier Blanc
The Glacier Blanc owes its name, the White Glacier, to a surface almost free of moraine: lying in a fairly open bed, it is rarely buried by rockfall from the surrounding walls. Around five kilometres long and some 7 km² in area, it flows down from the north face of the Barre des Écrins, the highest point of the range at 4,102 metres, and gives access to the Dôme de Neige des Écrins, the Roche Faurio and the Montagne des Agneaux. In the 19th century it formed a single two-branched glacier with the Glacier Noir; its snout retreated by 210 metres between 1989 and 1999, then by 300 metres between 2000 and 2006. The classic hike starts from the Pré de Madame Carle, a broad gravel flat at the foot of the Pelvoux, and climbs in about 2h30 to the Glacier Blanc hut, at 2,542 metres, opened in 1948 after building work supplied on men's backs. On the way, the old Tuckett hut of 1886, now an eco-museum, recalls the rock shelter where the British mountaineer Francis Fox Tuckett and his guides stopped in 1862. Beyond the hut, walking on the glacier is for roped-up mountaineers. Note for 2026: after the heavy rain of 28 August, the road to the Pré de Madame Carle, destroyed, is closed to cars, and access is on foot from Ailefroide.
Ailefroide
Ailefroide, the cold alp, is a high hamlet in the commune of Vallouise-Pelvoux, tucked beneath the faces of Mont Pelvoux, where the valley road ends towards the Pré de Madame Carle. In winter the sun barely reaches it, but in summer the place lives to the rhythm of climbing and mountaineering: classic multi-pitch routes on granite, single-pitch sport crags, and bouldering in the larch forest, where coloured marks on the rocks give the climbers away. The Bureau des Guides des Écrins organises ascents of the Pelvoux, the Sélé and the Barre des Écrins, and Ailefroide holds the mountaineering village label together with Pelvoux and Vallouise. For families, an easy path reaches the hamlet, first running alongside the Ailefroide gorges, a fun trail retraces the history of mountaineering, and children can try treetop adventure courses and tree climbing. The Bosse de Clapouse, a morning climb under the larches where chamois are often seen, is the family hike of the area. In winter, the road is not cleared of snow beyond Les Claux: the hamlet is reached on snowshoes or skis along 6 kilometres of snow-covered road.
Vallouise
Vallouise gave its name to the whole valley that climbs from L'Argentière-la-Bessée towards the Pelvoux. In the Middle Ages the community counted many Waldensians, followers of Peter Waldo; the crusade led in 1488 by the inquisitor Alberto Cattaneo and the Archbishop of Embrun brought massacres here, and the name Vallouise is said to honour Louis XII, who began to end the persecutions. The village, at 1,160 metres, can be explored in an hour: the 15th- and 16th-century church of Saint-Étienne, with its pietà, its Baroque altarpiece and its font dated 1518; the sundials, one of them by the itinerant painter Zarbula; the hamlet of Le Grand-Parcher and its early 17th-century chapel. The Écrins National Park visitor centre presents the wildlife and plants of the range, and in winter the Vallouise cross-country area lays out its loops along the Onde and around the village. The small Pelvoux-Vallouise ski area, 25 kilometres of runs between 1,250 and 2,300 metres served by seven lifts, completes the winter offer.
Dormillouse
Dormillouse is one of the thirteen hamlets of Freissinières, and the only place inhabited year-round in the core zone of the Écrins National Park. It takes about an hour to walk up from the car park at the end of the D238, on a path with 350 metres of ascent that climbs beside the Biaysse waterfalls to the glacial step where the hamlet sits, at around 1,800 metres. The site is no accident: the Clots plateau, 500 metres higher, diverted some of the avalanches. The hamlet is recorded as early as 1401 under the name Dormillosa. For centuries the Freissinières valley served as a refuge for Waldensians and then Protestants, and its isolation preserved some remarkable stone buildings. Above it, the Faravel plateau has yielded traces of human passage from the Upper Palaeolithic, the Mesolithic and the Neolithic, including an arrowhead found at 2,475 metres. The Faravel and Palluel lakes, the latter with its field of cairns, are linked by a fine day loop. After the floods of late August 2026, some sections in the area are closed: the tourist office keeps an update page.
Fournel silver mine
The Fournel silver mine tells the story that gave L'Argentière-la-Bessée its name. From the 10th to the 13th century, miners used fire-setting to dig into very hard rock for silver-bearing lead, down to 150 metres underground. Forgotten, the seam was rediscovered in 1785: up to 400 workers, many from Italy, then brought out 4 to 5 tonnes of ore a day, smelted in Marseille. Buried by the torrent's floods, the galleries were remarkably well preserved, and archaeologists have been exploring them since the 1990s. The classic guided tour lasts 2h30, including an hour underground: after a 20-minute video at the interpretation centre, you drive to the mine car park, 3.5 km away, then walk down a path with 80 metres of descent and more than 150 steps. Underground, the 600-metre lit route passes through the 19th-century exploration galleries, the machine room where water was pumped out and ore hauled up, then the vaulted chambers dug by fire-setting in the Middle Ages. In 2026, an adult ticket costs €18, or €12 for under-16s. Escape games and a medieval tour with coin striking complete the offer.
Durance gorges via ferrata
The Durance gorges, between L'Argentière-la-Bessée and Les Vigneaux, are the most accessible thrill site in the Pays des Écrins. The Roc Aventure park, a family business specialising in building via ferratas, runs four routes of increasing difficulty here. The orange route, 30 minutes, takes children from age 4 for €18; the green, one hour from age 6, is a first taste; the red, one hour from age 11, adds exposure and technical sections; the black, three hours from age 13, demands good fitness. The two zip lines, 500 metres each, fly nearly 200 metres above the river, supervised by staff, with automatic braking at the end; they run only in the morning and must be booked. The via ferrata ticket with harness, lanyards and helmet hire costs €24, €10 for access only, and the full-day package with the zip lines €45. The via ferratas are open from 9:00 to 18:00 without booking, and a play area with a sandpit and trampolines keeps the little ones busy. Other via ferratas dot the valley, from the Grande Falaise at Freissinières to the Combe de Narreyroux at Puy-Saint-Vincent.

Getting there and getting around
The Paris-Austerlitz to Briançon night train stops at L'Argentière-les-Écrins early in the morning, after a journey of more than eleven hours; regular engineering work on the line means occasional replacement coaches in 2026, so check when booking. By car, allow about eight hours from Paris via Grenoble and the Col du Lautaret, or via Gap.
Once there, a car is the simplest way to get between valleys; ask the tourist office about summer shuttles, and the Fournel mine runs its own in high season. After the floods of late August 2026, several roads are closed or restricted, including the one to the Pré de Madame Carle beyond Ailefroide, destroyed by the flood, and the one between the Pont du Rif and the Camping des Vaudois at Les Vigneaux.
In winter, the Ailefroide road is not cleared of snow beyond Les Claux. Winter equipment is compulsory in the Hautes-Alpes from 1 November to 31 March.
Where to stay in the Écrins (Vallouise)?
Budget: the area is rich in campsites, hikers' gîtes and mountain huts; in Ailefroide, the large campsite beside the torrent is the climbers' base. For hotels, Les Vallois in Vallouise, two stars, and the small places in L'Argentière-la-Bessée stay under €100.
Comfort: the Chalet Hôtel d'Ailefroide, 24 rooms in shady grounds at the foot of the Pelvoux, open in 2026 from 26 May to 20 September, and the hotels of Puy-Saint-Vincent for winter. Upmarket options are almost non-existent: more luxurious stays are found in Serre Chevalier or Briançon, half an hour away.
Our pick: a night at the Glacier Blanc hut, booked well in advance, to watch the day break over the Barre des Écrins, or a B&B in a Freissinières hamlet for the evening silence.

What to eat in the Écrins (Vallouise)?
The cooking of the Hautes-Alpes is best tasted in the valley inns: stuffed tourtons, oreilles d'âne, a gratin of wild spinach and pancakes from the neighbouring Champsaur and Valgaudemar valleys, mountain-pasture lamb and mountain tommes.
Génépi and herbal liqueurs are drunk at the end of the meal; wild bilberries and raspberries end up in tarts in late summer. The valley's producers' shops sell honey, cheese and local charcuterie.
In Ailefroide, snack bars and small terraces feed the climbers; in the villages, allow €16-28 for a main course in a restaurant. For a hut-to-hut hike, half board is booked along with the night.

Frequently asked questions about the Écrins (Vallouise)
Can you drive to the Pré de Madame Carle in 2026?
No. The road was washed away by the flood of 28 August 2026: it is closed to cars at Ailefroide, and its future, probably as a track, is under review. The Pré de Madame Carle is reached on foot along the right bank, 4.8 km with 360 m of ascent, then the Glacier Blanc hut by the usual path. The park visitor centre and the Pré de Madame Carle hut are closed.
When is the best time to visit the Pays des Écrins?
From late June to mid-September for hiking, staffed huts and white-water sports; July and August for the Fournel mine shuttle and the Puy-Saint-Vincent bike park. From December to March for downhill and cross-country skiing and ice climbing. May and October are quiet, but many services are closed.
Can you get to the Glacier Blanc without being a mountaineer?
Yes, as far as the Glacier Blanc hut, at 2,542 metres, on a hiking path with about 700 metres of ascent from the Pré de Madame Carle, a 2h30 climb. Beyond that, walking on the glacier requires a rope, crampons and experience, or a guide.
Can you reach the Pays des Écrins by train?
Yes, the night train from Paris-Austerlitz serves L'Argentière-les-Écrins in the morning, with occasional replacement coaches in 2026, and the station is the starting point for several activities on foot. To reach Vallouise, Ailefroide or Freissinières, you then need a summer shuttle, a taxi or a bike.
Where can you ski in the Pays des Écrins?
At Puy-Saint-Vincent, from 1,400 to 2,700 metres, with 75 kilometres of runs, open from 12 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, with an adult day pass priced at €44, and at Pelvoux-Vallouise, a small family ski area open from 19 December 2026 to 22 March 2027. Vallouise and Puy-Saint-Vincent also have their own cross-country areas.
