Kansas City

Straddling Missouri and Kansas, the jazz city of Count Basie and Charlie Parker has kept its clubs in the 18th & Vine district, more than a hundred barbecue restaurants and the National World War I Museum, at the foot of a 66-metre tower. People also come for a free art museum with giant shuttlecocks, a 1914 railway station and a streetcar that costs nothing.

Humid continental: hot, muggy summers around 31-32°C with big thunderstorms, cold winters around 3°C by day and often below freezing at night, possible snow from December to March, and a risk of tornadoes in spring. The best time to visit Kansas City is April, May, June, September and October, with temperatures reaching 31-32°C (July). By contrast, January, February, March, July, August, November and December are generally less favourable (less pleasant weather or big crowds, depending on the destination), though a trip is still possible with a bit of planning. In high season, book early: prices and visitor numbers climb fast.

Go against the flow. To avoid the crowds without sacrificing too much on the weather, aim for March and November: the crowds thin out, prices drop too, and the climate stays pleasant.

Why go to Kansas City?

Kansas City grew up where the Missouri meets the Kansas River, at the start of the Oregon, California and Santa Fe trails, then grew rich on the railway and the cattle trade. Its downtown and older neighbourhoods tell the story of that prosperity: a monumental railway station, Art Deco buildings from the 1930s, and boulevards and parks laid out by George Kessler. The city spreads across two states, but most of what you come to see is on the Missouri side.

Under the political boss Tom Pendergast, between the wars, the city ignored Prohibition and its clubs played all night long: this is where Kansas City jazz was born, the jazz of Count Basie and Charlie Parker. The 18th & Vine district, the heart of Black life at the time, now brings together the jazz museum, clubs and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, two places that tell American history through music and sport.

Finally, Kansas City is a city to taste: more than a hundred barbecue restaurants, breweries such as Boulevard, and a food scene that has taken off in the Crossroads and River Market districts. Its major museums, the Nelson-Atkins and the WWI Museum, are among the best in the Midwest, and the first is free. Prices stay reasonable, the streetcar is free, and the city pairs with St. Louis, 400 km (250 miles) to the east, for a trip across Missouri.

Safety in Kansas City: should you be worried?

Kansas City is safe in the areas visitors frequent: downtown, Crossroads, River Market, Union Station, the Plaza and Westport. The city's crime rate is high, but it is concentrated in residential neighbourhoods in the east that tourists do not pass through; take a ride-hailing car at night to get to and from 18th & Vine. Westport and Power & Light are lively at weekends, with occasional fights when the bars close. Severe thunderstorms and spring tornadoes are the main natural risk: follow the alerts and locate your hotel's shelter. Winter brings black ice and icy winds. Carrying firearms is legal in Missouri, except where a sign prohibits it. Medical care is excellent but very expensive, so health insurance covering the United States is essential.

Downtown, Crossroads and Power & Light

The centre is packed with Art Deco buildings from the 1930s, including City Hall and its 30th-floor observation deck, which can be visited by appointment, requested by email at least five days ahead. Just to the south, the Crossroads Arts District fills former warehouses turned into galleries, studios, cafés and breweries, and its First Friday evening, on the first Friday of every month, packs the streets. The Power & Light District, set around a covered square, lines up bars and giant screens on Chiefs game nights. The Kauffman Center, a shell-shaped concert hall designed by Moshe Safdie, towers over the district.

18th & Vine

The historic jazz district, east of the centre, brings together the American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in a single building, along with the Blue Room, a club with jazz on weeknights, and the Gem Theater. Arthur Bryant's, the most historic barbecue joint in town, is a few blocks away on Brooklyn Avenue. The district can feel quiet during the day: come for the museums in the afternoon and stay for a concert in the evening.

Union Station, Crown Center and the WWI Museum

South of the centre, the 1914 station and its Grand Hall face the hill of the Liberty Memorial, home to the National World War I Museum; the lawn at the foot of the tower gives the finest view of the skyline. Crown Center, a shopping and hotel complex built by Hallmark, whose headquarters is next door, houses the SEA LIFE aquarium and shops. The KC Streetcar serves all three within a few minutes of downtown.

Country Club Plaza, Westport and the Nelson-Atkins

The Plaza, a Seville-style shopping district from the 1920s, runs along Brush Creek, a fifteen-minute walk from the Nelson-Atkins and its sculpture park. Westport, to the north, is one of the city's oldest neighbourhoods, a former pioneer trading post turned into a street of bars and restaurants, lively mainly at weekends. The free Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and the UMKC university, where the streetcar line ends, are close by. It is the most pleasant area to stay in if you are travelling by car.

River Market

On the banks of the Missouri, where the city was born, the City Market has hosted a farmers' market at weekends for more than a century, surrounded by Vietnamese, Ethiopian and Middle Eastern grocers. The streetcar runs through the district, which lines up cafés, restaurants and lofts in former warehouses, before reaching its northern terminus by the river. Berkley Riverfront Park follows the river and is ideal for a walk or a run at sunset.

Independence and the east

Independence, 20 minutes to the east, is Harry Truman's town: his presidential library, his home preserved by the National Park Service and the central square where he began his morning walks. It is also the historic starting point of the Oregon and California trails, a story told at the National Frontier Trails Museum. On the way, the Truman Sports Complex brings together Kauffman Stadium, home of the Royals, and Arrowhead, the Chiefs' stadium, famous for its din on game days.

How many days, and which itinerary in Kansas City?

Two days cover 18th & Vine, the WWI Museum, the Nelson-Atkins and a few barbecue joints. Three or four days let you add Independence, the Plaza, a jazz concert and a Chiefs or Royals game. Beyond that, Kansas City pairs with St. Louis for a journey across Missouri.

The weekend (3 days)

Day 1: the WWI Museum in the morning and up the tower, Union Station, a barbecue lunch, Crossroads in the afternoon by streetcar, dinner in the River Market. Day 2: the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the American Jazz Museum, burnt ends at Arthur Bryant's, the Nelson-Atkins in the afternoon, an evening of jazz at the Blue Room or in a downtown club. Day 3: Country Club Plaza and its fountains, Westport, one last barbecue joint before leaving.

Kansas City and Independence (5 days)

The three weekend days, plus a day in Independence for the Truman Library, his home and the National Frontier Trails Museum, and a free day between the Boulevard brewery, the Kemper Museum, a Royals game from April to September or a Chiefs game from September to January. If you are there for First Friday weekend, keep an evening for the Crossroads galleries.

Across Missouri (10 days)

Four days in Kansas City, then the road east along the Missouri: the Katy Trail, a former railway line turned into a cycle path, to ride for a stretch from Rocheport, the vineyards and the German-founded town of Hermann for a night, then St. Louis for three days, with the Gateway Arch, Forest Park and the City Museum. Hannibal, Mark Twain's boyhood town, makes a return trip from St. Louis, 2 hours to the north. Allow about 800 km in all, including the return.

How to get to Kansas City and get around?

There are no direct flights from Europe: Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is reached with a connection in Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Dallas or New York, for a journey of 11 to 13 hours. Its single terminal, opened in 2023, is about 25 km north of the centre, 25 or 30 minutes by taxi or ride-hailing app outside rush hour.

The KC Streetcar, a free tram, runs every day from Berkley Riverfront Park and the River Market to downtown, Crossroads, Union Station, Crown Center and, since its extension along Main Street, the Plaza and the UMKC university. It runs from 5am to midnight, until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. It is the backbone of a car-free stay.

RideKC buses complete the network, notably towards 18th & Vine, a twenty-minute walk from the streetcar line. Ride-hailing cars are plentiful and cheap for evening trips between a jazz club and your hotel.

A car becomes useful for Independence, the Chiefs and Royals stadiums, the suburban barbecue joints and onward travel to St. Louis on the I-70 motorway. Downtown hotels charge for parking, while those on the Plaza and on the outskirts often offer it free.

Where to stay in Kansas City?

Downtown has the largest concentration of hotels, several of them in restored historic buildings: the Hilton President and the Hotel Phillips, both from the 1920s and 1930s, or the Hotel Kansas City, in the city's former gentlemen's club. Expect €130-250 a night, within walking distance of the streetcar and the nightlife districts.

Crossroads and Union Hill, south of the centre, have a few characterful hotels, such as the Crossroads Hotel, in a former building from the Pendergast era, and recent chain hotels near the streetcar line, among galleries and breweries.

Country Club Plaza gathers more upmarket hotels, the InterContinental, the Raphael and The Fontaine, with parking and walking access to the Nelson-Atkins. It is the best base for a trip by car, and the district stays lively in the evening.

Prices climb steeply on Chiefs game weekends and during major conventions. Chain hotels at the airport and in Independence cost €90-130 a night, with free parking, but you will need a car for everything else.

What to eat in Kansas City?

Barbecue is a religion: pork, beef, chicken, sausages and burnt ends smoked for hours and smothered in a sweet, molasses-based tomato sauce. Arthur Bryant's and Gates for the institutions, Joe's Kansas City for the petrol station setting and its Z-Man, Q39 or Jack Stack for a more comfortable dining room. Expect $15-25, about €13-22, a plate.

Steak is the other legacy of the city's stockyards: the strip steak, known as the "KC strip", is served in the steakhouses downtown and on the Plaza, for $50-90, about €43-77, for dinner.

The River Market lines up Vietnamese, Ethiopian and Middle Eastern restaurants around the City Market, while Crossroads is home to young chefs and cocktail bars. The Boulevard brewery, founded in 1989, offers tours and serves its beers in its tasting room.

Prices are shown before tax: add about 9 to 10% on purchases and meals, and more on hotel rooms. A tip of 18 to 22% is expected in restaurants, and $1-2 per drink at the bar. Tap water is safe to drink.

Which kind of traveller is it for?

Kansas City lends itself to a cultural, foodie and festive trip. Whether you travel with friends, as a couple or even solo, everyone finds their own pace. For accommodation, you will mostly find classic hotels and boutique hotels.
