Frequently asked questions

How many days for a road trip from Cape Town to the Garden Route?

Allow about 18 days for this crossing of 9 stages and 17 nights, from Cape Town to Addo Park, with one to just over three hours' driving per stage. In 10 days, keep Cape Town and its peninsula, Hermanus, Cape Agulhas, Knysna, Tsitsikamma and Addo, skipping Stellenbosch and the Little Karoo.

How much does a three-week road trip in South Africa cost?

Excluding accommodation: about $425 (€370) of rental over 17 days at the Kayak average rate of $25 a day, more in December; about €130 of petrol at September 2026 prices for roughly 1,300 km; 141 rand (€8) of tolls; and about 1,620 rand (€87) of park fees per adult (Cape Point, Boulders, Storms River Mouth, Addo).

Is it dangerous to drive in South Africa?

The main roads are in very good condition, but the country has around 15,000 road deaths a year. The French foreign ministry advises not driving at night outside towns, keeping windows up and doors locked, and not stopping for an unmarked car. Near Cape Town airport, stay on the N2.

Do you need an International Driving Permit to drive in South Africa?

Yes: the French foreign ministry states that an EU licence must be accompanied by an International Driving Permit. Rental companies such as Avis only accept a licence on its own if it is written in English, with photo and signature. Avis rents from age 18 with a licence held for one year, with a surcharge of 155 rand a day under 25.

Should you tip the pump attendant in South Africa?

Yes, it's customary: every station has an attendant who fills the tank, cleans the windscreen and offers to check oil and tyres. Leave 5 to 10 rand. Most stations take cards, the smallest sometimes only cash. Car guards in high-vis vests also expect a few rand, when you leave.

Can you rent the car in Cape Town and return it in Gqeberha?

Yes, the major rental companies are at both airports. A one-way rental may incur a one-way fee, applied mainly over long distances and shown at the quote stage (Avis): compare the total with a loop back to Cape Town. From Addo, Gqeberha airport is about an hour's drive.
