Why go to Sarasota?
Sarasota owes its face to a circus man. In 1927, John Ringling set up the winter quarters of his circus here, the largest in the United States, and spent his fortune on land, islands, bridges and works of art: he laid out St. Armands Circle, built Ca' d'Zan, a Venetian-style palace, on the bay, and assembled a collection of Baroque painting that he bequeathed to the state along with the rest of his estate. From that era, the city has kept a cultural life out of all proportion to its size, opera, ballet, theatres and a film festival included.
It is also a city of beaches, among the finest on the Gulf Coast. Siesta Key, Lido Key and Longboat Key, barrier islands linked by bridges, line up white quartz sand and a calm sea, warm from May to October, with sunsets over the water every evening. Further south, Venice and its fossil shark teeth offer another way to spend a day at the beach.
Finally, Sarasota remains on a human scale, with a walkable downtown, neighbourhoods of 1950s modernist architecture and nature close at hand: the alligators of Myakka River State Park are 30 minutes away, the Lido mangrove tunnels can be explored by kayak, and Tampa is only an hour to the north. People come here for a week of beaches and museums without the crowds or the excess of Miami or Orlando.

Safety in Sarasota: should you be worried?
Sarasota is a calm and safe city, and the beaches as well as downtown can be enjoyed without difficulty by day and by night. Thefts from cars parked in beach car parks are the most common crime: leave nothing on view. In the sea, swim in front of the lifeguard stations and do the stingray shuffle, dragging your feet through the sand, to scare off the rays that hide on the shallow bottom. Red tide, a bloom of microscopic algae, affects the coast in some years: it irritates the eyes and throat and kills fish, so check the county's bulletins before heading to the beach. Alligators live in every body of fresh water, including golf course and housing development ponds: never swim anywhere but the sea. From June to November, follow the National Hurricane Center bulletins; the barrier islands are evacuated if a hurricane approaches. Insurance covering medical care in the United States is essential.

Downtown Sarasota can be explored on foot, around Main Street and Palm Avenue, with restaurants, galleries, bookshops and the 1926 opera house. The bayfront brings together Bayfront Park, the marina, the Unconditional Surrender statue and The Bay park, with its lawns and waterside walkways. The Selby garden occupies the southern tip of downtown. The Saturday morning farmers' market livens up Lemon Avenue all year round. It is the most practical area to stay without a car.
St. Armands and Lido Key

Across the John Ringling Bridge, St. Armands Circle brings together shops and restaurants around a roundabout planted with palm trees and statues, with the Circus Ring of Fame. Five minutes away, Lido Key offers Lido Beach, its beach hotels and South Lido Park, where mangrove tunnels can be explored by kayak. To the north, Longboat Key unrolls its condominiums, golf courses and quieter beaches as far as the tip of Anna Maria Island.
Siesta Key

Sarasota's best-known island, 15 minutes south of downtown, with its large public beach of white quartz sand, its village of bars and restaurants with a seaside resort feel, and Crescent Beach, to the south, quieter, with the rocks of Point of Rocks for snorkelling. Turtle Beach, at the southern tip, wilder, attracts anglers and shell collectors. A free trolley links the beach, the village and Turtle Beach. Accommodation is mostly holiday rentals and small beach hotels.
The Ringling estate and the north

North of downtown, near the airport, the Ringling estate brings together the art museum, the circus museum, the Ca' d'Zan mansion and 27 hectares of bayside gardens, including Mable Ringling's rose garden of 1913. The estate also houses the Historic Asolo Theater, an 18th-century Italian auditorium rebuilt piece by piece, and the neighbouring area is home to New College, a university. To the east, the new Mote aquarium occupies the University Town Center area, near the I-75 motorway.
Venice and the south

40 minutes to the south, Venice, a small 1920s town of Mediterranean-inspired buildings, is known for its fossil shark teeth, on Caspersen Beach, Venice Beach and around its fishing pier. On the way, the second Selby site, Historic Spanish Point in Osprey, presents prehistoric shell mounds, pioneer houses and bayside gardens. The Legacy Trail, a former railway line turned cycle path, links Sarasota to Venice.
Myakka and the backcountry

30 minutes to the east, Myakka River State Park protects the river, lakes and wet prairies home to alligators, roseate spoonbills and waterbirds, with a suspended canopy walkway and an observation tower. A paved road runs through it, with trails, bikes and kayaks. Further north, Lakewood Ranch and its new housing developments are a reminder of the region's growth, and to the south-east, cattle ranches still occupy the plain. Tampa, with Ybor City and its Riverwalk, is an hour's drive to the north.

How to get to Sarasota and get around?
From Europe, Sarasota requires a connection, with no non-stop flight from Paris: Sarasota-Bradenton airport, 8 km north of downtown, is reached with a connection in New York, Atlanta or Charlotte, for 12 to 14 hours of travel. Tampa, an hour's drive to the north, offers more flights and often cheaper hire cars, and Orlando, with non-stop flights from Paris on Air France, is 2 h 15 away.
A hire car, €40-70 a day, is the simplest option: the beaches, Myakka, Venice and the aquarium are spread out, and county buses run infrequently. US 41, the Tamiami Trail, runs along the bay from north to south, and the I-75 motorway passes east of the city.
A free trolley links Siesta Key Beach, Siesta Key village and Turtle Beach, on the island; from downtown Sarasota, take a county bus or a rideshare. Rideshares are plentiful for short trips between downtown and the islands.
The bridges to the islands jam up when the beaches empty, from February to April. Parking is free in the large public beach car parks, but they fill early in season; downtown and at St. Armands, it is partly paid or time-limited.
Where to stay in Sarasota?
Downtown hotels, chain or characterful, cost €160-280 a night in season, within walking distance of Main Street, the bay and Selby. It is the right choice for a culture-focused stay, with the beach 15 minutes away.
Siesta Key and Lido Key line up beach hotels, small condominiums and aparthotels with kitchens, at €180-400 a night from February to April, often with a minimum stay. Longboat Key, to the north, is home to the large golf and beach resorts, quieter and more expensive.
The airport and University Parkway area, to the north, has the cheapest chain hotels, at €110-170 a night, near the Ringling and the aquarium, with free parking. Lakewood Ranch, to the east, also offers recent mid-range hotels.
High season runs from February to April, when retirees from the North and spring holidaymakers fill the city. Prices drop sharply from May to November. Taxes add about 12% to rooms, and beach rentals charge cleaning fees.
