Who is Air Europa?

Founded in 1986, Air Europa is a private Spanish airline of the Globalia group (Hidalgo family), a member of SkyTeam since 2007. From its hub at Madrid-Barajas, it links Europe with the Americas: 24 destinations on the continent, from Buenos Aires to Cancún. It carried 12 million passengers in 2024. In November 2025, Turkish Airlines signed to buy around 26% of its capital for €300 million; approved by Madrid in June 2026, the deal was still awaiting the green light from Brussels.

In France, Air Europa flies from Paris-Orly to Madrid, and almost everything else goes through Barajas. On European flights on Boeing 737s, no meal is included: you order à la carte from the Bistro Bar. On the other hand, even the Lite fare includes a 10 kg cabin case and a bag under the seat. On long-haul, on Boeing 787 Dreamliners, economy serves two meals with drinks, and four paid menus, including one by chef Martín Berasategui, can be booked 24 hours in advance.

It is a good choice for reaching Latin America with a single stopover, as far as Asunción or Santa Cruz de la Sierra, and for travelling light without paying for a cabin case. It is a less good choice if you are in France but far from Paris, if you are counting on quick compensation in case of delay (0/10 from AirHelp for claims handling), or if you are travelling with an animal in the cabin: online check-in is then closed to you.

What Air Europa does well

  • Even the Lite fare, the cheapest, includes a 10 kg cabin case (55 x 35 x 25 cm) and a bag under the seat, on short and long-haul alike.
  • A dense network to Latin America and the Caribbean via Madrid: 24 destinations in the Americas, including Lima, Bogotá, Havana, Montevideo and Punta Cana.
  • In long-haul economy, two meal services with drinks are included, on board Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
  • Decent punctuality: 76% of flights on time from October 2024 to September 2025 according to AirHelp, with 8.1/10 for passenger opinions.

What often catches people out

  • AirHelp gives Air Europa 0/10 for handling compensation claims (AirHelp Score 2025): in case of delay or cancellation, be prepared to persist.
  • No online check-in with an animal in the cabin, for an unaccompanied minor or with a special request: you must go to the desk, which closes 45 minutes before a European flight and 60 minutes before an intercontinental one.
  • In October 2023, a cyberattack on the website's payment system exposed card numbers, expiry dates and security codes: the airline asked its customers to cancel their cards.
  • Labour relations are tense: the pilots' strike (SEPLA union) caused more than 300 cancellations over 26 days between May and July 2023.
🎒 Cabin baggageThe included cabin bag measures 55 x 35 x 25 cm, handles, pockets and wheels included, for 10 kg in economy (two pieces totalling 14 kg in Business), plus a 40 x 30 x 15 cm accessory under the seat, from the Lite fare upwards. Check the width: 35 cm, not 40. An oversized bag goes in the hold, with possible fees whose amount is not published; even a compliant bag may be sent to the hold at the gate if the lockers are full. A second cabin bag cannot be bought.

🕐 Punctuality76% of Air Europa flights arrived on time (less than 15 minutes late) between October 2024 and September 2025, according to the AirHelp Score 2025 (overall score 5.25/10, 94th out of 117 airlines, 7.6/10 for punctuality and 0/10 for claims handling).
