Who is Eurowings?
Eurowings is the low-cost airline of the Lufthansa group. Born in 1993 as a small regional airline, it took over the Germanwings network from 2015 and now operates from its headquarters in Düsseldorf and 13 international bases, including Palma de Mallorca, Salzburg, Prague and Stockholm. In 2025, its 98 aircraft carried 23.7 million passengers to more than 150 destinations, mostly in Europe.
In France, it flies notably from Paris CDG, Nice, Lyon, Marseille and Bastia. From Paris, some thirty destinations are open for booking, direct or with a stopover; to Germany, it links France with Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne-Bonn, Düsseldorf, Hanover and Stuttgart. Three fares shape the trip: Basic (the flight and a small bag under the seat), Smart (two pieces of hand luggage, free standard seat, free desk check-in) and BIZclass. Everything else, including hold luggage, is bought as an extra.
It is a good choice for reaching the big German cities other than Frankfurt and Munich, where it is the leader, and for light travellers who can fit into a 40 x 30 x 25 cm bag. Skytrax named it Europe's best low-cost airline in 2025. It suits travellers with luggage less well if they book Basic without adding anything: cabin case, hold luggage and desk check-in are then each paid for separately, and often cost more at the airport.
What Eurowings does well
- Online check-in opens 72 hours before departure, free of charge on all fares, Basic included.
- Solid punctuality: 74% of flights on time from October 2024 to September 2025, and 22nd place out of 117 airlines in the AirHelp Score 2025.
- Named Europe's best low-cost airline at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2025.
- The Smart fare includes two pieces of hand luggage, a standard seat of your choice and desk check-in at no extra cost.
What often catches people out
- On the Basic fare, checking in at the desk costs €20 per person if you decide on the spot (€5 booked in advance), and is payable by credit card only.
- Hand luggage that is oversized, one piece too many or heavier than 8 kg is charged €60 at the boarding gate, then sent to the hold.
- As a subsidiary of the Lufthansa group, Eurowings is hit by its labour disputes: on 13 April 2026, the group's pilots' strike affected its departures from German airports.
- On a flight operated by a partner airline (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Condor, among others), you sometimes have to check in on that airline's website rather than on eurowings.com.
🕐 Punctuality74% of Eurowings flights arrived on time (less than 15 minutes late) between October 2024 and September 2025, according to the AirHelp Score 2025 (overall score 7.37/10, 22nd out of 117 airlines).
Frequently asked questions
When does Eurowings online check-in open?
72 hours before departure, on the website or the app, free of charge on all fares.
When does Eurowings check-in close?
3 hours before departure as a general rule; at most departure airports in Germany, up to 40 minutes before. The exact time depends on the departure airport and is shown in your booking.
How much does check-in at the airport desk cost with Eurowings?
Basic fare only: €20 per person to check in at the desk if you decide at the airport (€5 if the option is added when booking), payable by credit card, as cash is generally not accepted. Free on Smart and BIZclass.
Do I need to print my Eurowings boarding pass?
No. Once you have checked in online, you can keep it in the Eurowings app, in Wallet or receive it as a PDF by email. If you are travelling with hand luggage only, you go straight to security and then to the boarding gate.
My return flight leaves from Marrakech or Tirana: how do I check in?
Online check-in is not offered from several airports, including Agadir, Casablanca, Marrakech, Tirana, Sarajevo, Tivat, Beirut and several Turkish cities. In that case, check-in at the desk is free for all passengers, whatever the fare. In Morocco, the desk opens 3 hours before departure and closes 1 hour before.
