Who is Transavia?

Transavia is the low-cost airline of the Air France-KLM group. Born in the Netherlands in the 1960s, it has operated in France since 2007, with its main base at Paris-Orly and departures from several major French regional cities. It flies mostly south: Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, North Africa and the Middle East, on direct flights of one to five hours. The positioning is simple: low headline fares from main airports, and everything else sold as an extra.

On board, it is unashamedly low-cost: dense cabins on Boeing 737s gradually being replaced by Airbus A320neos, nothing included in the Basic fare apart from an accessory to slide under the seat, paid food and drink, and seats à la carte. Choosing a seat costs €6 to €15 depending on its location; otherwise, a seat is assigned to you at check-in, which opens 30 hours before departure. The crew is French-speaking and the experience is generally free of nasty surprises if the extras are sorted in advance.

It is a good choice for heading to the sun from Orly on a budget, especially if you travel light or add your extras when you book. It is a less good choice if you need to make a connection, since tickets are sold point to point and are not protected between two flights, if you refuse to pick apart fare tables, or if you are aiming for faraway destinations: the network stops at the edges of greater Europe and the Mediterranean.

What Transavia does well

  • Departures from Paris-Orly, much easier to reach than the secondary airports used by other low-cost airlines.
  • 79% of flights arrived on time between October 2024 and September 2025 according to AirHelp, better than easyJet and Ryanair (71% each) over the same period.
  • The backing of the Air France-KLM group, with the Flying Blue programme to earn miles on its flights.
  • A free 40 x 30 x 20 cm accessory accepted on all fares, including Basic.

What often catches people out

  • The cabin case is not included in the Basic and Plus fares: booked online, it starts at around €13, but if you turn up at the gate with it unbooked, the bill climbs to €70.
  • The weight limit is tight: cabin bag and accessory together must not exceed 10 kg.
  • Without a paid extra, your seat is assigned automatically at check-in, with the risk of being separated from your companions; a chosen seat costs €6 to €15.
  • Transavia is one of the seven airlines targeted by the complaint filed in May 2025 by European consumer associations (BEUC) against charging for cabin bags.
🎒 Cabin baggageAll fares include a single 40 x 30 x 20 cm accessory to slide under the seat. The 55 x 40 x 25 cm cabin case is included in the Smart and Max bundles, or sold as an extra from around €13; the cabin allowance (case plus accessory) must not exceed 10 kg. Main trap: without booking it beforehand, a cabin case presented at the boarding gate costs €70.

🕐 PunctualityAccording to AirHelp, 79% of Transavia flights arrived on time between October 2024 and September 2025, for a punctuality score of 7.9/10.
