ITA Airways check-in: when and how to check in online

The rules below are checked against the official website. Checking in with ITA Airways is always free: nobody needs to pay a service to do it, let alone a subscription.

⚠️ The ITA Airways trap: Online, check-in for an international flight closes 1 hour before departure, whereas at the desk a flight within the Schengen Area, such as Paris to Rome, stays open until 40 minutes before: don't count on the app at the last minute. And on a flight sold by ITA but operated by a partner airline, ITA online check-in does not work.

Who is ITA Airways?

Born on 15 October 2021 to succeed Alitalia, ITA Airways presents itself as Italy's largest airline. Lufthansa has held 41% of its capital since January 2025 and in May 2026 exercised its option to go up to 90%, a transaction expected in the first quarter of 2027. A member of Star Alliance since 1 April 2026, it has adopted Miles & More and operates 99 aircraft around its two hubs, Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate.

In France, it flies from Paris and Nice: around 47 flights a week between Paris CDG and Rome, several flights a day from CDG and Orly to Milan Linate, and some 44 weekly flights between Nice and Rome. Summer 2026 added a daily Marseille to Rome flight, seasonal until 30 September. On board, the service follows the length of the flight: drinks on the shortest routes, a snack on short-haul, a multi-course meal on intercontinental flights.

ITA is a good choice for reaching Rome or Milan direct, heading on to southern Italy and the islands with a connection at Fiumicino, or collecting Miles & More miles. Another plus: it does not apply the Economy Basic fare without a cabin case launched in 2026 by Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian. It is less so if you are travelling with a checked case on the Economy Light fare, which includes none, or on a strike day in Italy: on 26 February 2026, it cancelled around 55% of its flights.

What ITA Airways does well

  • Regular direct flights from France: around 47 a week from Paris CDG to Rome, 44 from Nice to Rome, and several a day from CDG and Orly to Milan Linate.
  • The 8 kg cabin case (55 x 40 x 23 cm) and an accessory remain included: ITA does not apply the Economy Basic fare without cabin baggage launched by the rest of the Lufthansa group in 2026.
  • A member of Star Alliance since 1 April 2026 with the Miles & More programme, and a 4-star Skytrax rating confirmed for 2026.
  • Online check-in opens 48 hours before departure, even with bags to drop off afterwards at the dedicated desks.

What often catches people out

  • Italian air transport strikes take a heavy toll: ITA cancelled around 55% of its flights on 26 February 2026 and around 27% on 10 April 2026.
  • The Economy Light fare includes no checked bag: you have to buy one, which is cheaper online up to 1 hour before departure than at the airport.
  • On very busy flights (excluding intercontinental), your cabin bag may be taken at the boarding gate and placed in the hold.
  • Online check-in is not possible for unaccompanied minors and passengers needing assistance, who go through the airport; for the United States, you must be at the desk 3 hours 30 minutes before departure for document checks.
🎒 Cabin baggageCabin baggage measures at most 55 x 40 x 23 cm, handles, pockets and wheels included, for 8 kg, plus a 40 x 30 x 15 cm accessory (handbag, small backpack, laptop bag). Sizers are available at the check-in desks and a non-compliant bag may be refused on board. Trap: on a full flight, your case may go in the hold at the boarding gate, so keep power banks and spare lithium batteries with you, as they are banned in the hold.

🕐 PunctualityAccording to Cirium, 76.75% of ITA Airways flights arrived on time in 2025 (arrival within 14 minutes of the scheduled time), and 75.8% of departures from Italy: the best rate among Italian airlines, ahead of Air Dolomiti, Ryanair and easyJet.

Can I travel with my cat or small dog in the cabin?

Yes, dogs and cats only since 1 December 2025, at least 3 months old, up to 8 kg including the carrier (12 kg on Italian domestic flights), in a soft 55 x 40 x 23 cm carrier placed under the seat. A form must be filled in before departure and presented in duplicate at check-in.
