Who is easyJet?

easyJet is the British pioneer of low-fare flying, founded in 1995 at Luton. In France, it has established itself as the country's second-largest carrier, with bases and dozens of routes from Paris, Nice, Lyon, Toulouse, Nantes and Bordeaux. Unlike Ryanair, it favours major airports over remote secondary ones, which makes door-to-door journeys simpler, and its network covers the whole of Europe plus the Mediterranean rim.

On board, Airbus A320-family aircraft in a single class, non-reclining seats set fairly close together, and nothing free to eat or drink. The basic ticket includes only a 45 x 36 x 20 cm bag to place under the seat, with no official weight limit as long as you can carry it yourself. Everything else (large cabin bag, hold luggage, seat choice, priority boarding) is paid for à la carte, at prices that vary by route and date.

It is a good choice for a city break or a quick return trip from a major airport, provided you add the extras you need when you book. It is a less good choice if you plan to chain two flights, since tickets are sold point to point and are not protected, if you travel with a lot of luggage but don't want to pay for extras, or if sitting next to your companions at no extra cost is non-negotiable: without a paid seat, seats are allocated automatically at check-in.

What easyJet does well

  • A dense French network from major airports, not out-of-town ones.
  • The free 45 x 36 x 20 cm bag is more generous than Ryanair's (40 x 30 x 20 cm), with no official weight limit.
  • Online check-in opens 30 days before departure, the widest window in the low-cost sector.
  • The large cabin bag is included with an Up Front or Extra Legroom seat, or with the easyJet Plus membership.

What often catches people out

  • An oversized bag spotted at the boarding gate goes in the hold for €48 per journey, protruding wheels or handles included.
  • Without a paid seat, automatic allocation at check-in can split up groups and families.
  • Only 71% of flights arrived on time between October 2024 and September 2025 according to AirHelp, which ranks the airline 81st out of 117 (overall score 5.79/10), with compensation handling judged poor.
  • easyJet is one of the seven airlines targeted by the complaint filed in May 2025 by European consumer associations (BEUC) against cabin bag fees.
🎒 Cabin baggageThe basic ticket includes a single 45 x 36 x 20 cm bag, wheels and handles included, to fit under the seat; there is no official maximum weight, but you must be able to lift it yourself. The large 56 x 45 x 25 cm cabin bag can be bought as an extra at a price that varies by route and date, or comes with Up Front and Extra Legroom seats and the easyJet Plus card. Main trap: at the gate, any non-compliant bag goes in the hold for €48.

🕐 PunctualityAccording to AirHelp, around 71% of easyJet flights arrived on time between October 2024 and September 2025 (overall score 5.79/10, 81st out of 117 airlines assessed).

Frequently asked questions

30 days before departure, for all flights. It is the widest window of any European low-cost airline.

When does easyJet check-in close?

2 hours before departure, online and in the app alike.

When can I check in online with easyJet?

From 30 days up to 2 hours before departure, on the website or app. Note: once check-in has closed, you cannot check in at all, not even at the airport. The airline recommends being at the gate 30 minutes before take-off.

What happens if my bag is bigger than 45 x 36 x 20 cm?

It goes in the hold at the gate for €48 per journey. Measure your bag including wheels and handles: that is the most common mistake, and sizer checks are frequent.
