Who is Volotea?

Volotea was founded in Barcelona in 2011 by Carlos Muñoz and Lázaro Ros, the founders of Vueling, and has been flying since 2012. Its idea: to link medium-sized cities directly, without going through the big hubs. France is its leading market, with 11 bases (Nantes, the first, then Bordeaux, Toulouse, Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Strasbourg, Brest, Lourdes, Rodez and Montpellier), around 25 airports served and some thirty aircraft based in France.

On board its Airbus A319s and A320s, the low-cost recipe applies: a free bag under the seat, the cabin case reserved for priority boarding, and seats, snacks and drinks at extra cost. The experience owes most to the small airports: short queues, quick boarding, parking a stone's throw from the terminal. Megavolotea subscribers enjoy permanent discounts on tickets and extras. Frequencies remain low, often two or three flights a week on a route, with a highly seasonal network.

It is the airline of France's regions: it lets you fly from Brest, Rodez or Strasbourg to the Mediterranean without transiting through Paris, often on routes it alone operates. A poor pick, on the other hand, for travellers in a hurry or on business: if a flight is cancelled, the next direct flight may be several days later, and the point-to-point network offers no protected connections. Passenger reviews remain decent, with a score of 7.5 out of 10 from AirHelp.

What Volotea does well

  • France's leading regional network: 11 French bases, around 25 airports served and cross-country routes that avoid going through Paris.
  • A 40 x 30 x 20 cm bag included free with every ticket, to place under the seat.
  • Direct routes between medium-sized cities that it is often alone in offering, from airports where you board in a few minutes.
  • Fairly satisfied passengers for a low-cost airline: customer reviews rated 7.5 out of 10 in the AirHelp Score 2025.

What often catches people out

  • Low frequencies, often two or three flights a week on a route: if a flight is cancelled, the next direct flight may be several days later.
  • Volotea is among the airlines penalised in 2024 by the Spanish Ministry of Consumer Affairs for charging for cabin bags (a decision being challenged in court).
  • Cabin weight is limited to 10 kg for the bag and case combined: above that, or if the bag does not comply, the case goes in the hold for €65 per item.
  • A boarding pass printed at the desk costs €30 per passenger if you haven't sorted anything out online.
🎒 Cabin baggageThe 40 x 30 x 20 cm under-seat bag remains included with all tickets. The 55 x 40 x 20 cm cabin case only comes on board with the priority boarding option, from around ten euros online, with prices varying by route and date. Main trap: the 10 kg limit applies to both bags combined, otherwise they go in the hold for €65.

🕐 PunctualityAccording to the AirHelp Score, 79% of Volotea flights arrived on time between October 2024 and September 2025.
