Who is Wizz Air?
Wizz Air is Central Europe's big ultra-low-cost airline: founded in Hungary in 2003, first flight in 2004, headquartered in Budapest, with a fleet of Airbus A320s and A321neos among the youngest on the continent. In France, it mainly operates from Paris Beauvais to the Balkans, Eastern Europe and the Caucasus (Belgrade, Sofia, Skopje, Podgorica, Yerevan), supplemented by a few routes from Nice and Lyon to Tirana, Cluj, Bucharest, Naples or Kraków.
Flying Wizz means accepting a completely stripped-back experience: one under-seat bag included, everything else extra, tight seats, no free drinks and a crew selling snacks and perfume during the flight. Check-in is done online, or you pay €40 to €50 at the desk, and bag sizes are checked without leniency at boarding. In return, headline fares are among the lowest in Europe: the Beauvais to Yerevan route was launched at €66 one way.
It is unbeatable for flying direct to cities no other airline serves from France, such as Belgrade, Yerevan or Podgorica, and for very tight budgets travelling light. Avoid it if you need flexibility or customer service you can actually reach: Wizz Air came last in the Which? 2025 satisfaction ranking, and the British regulator forced it in 2023 to reopen 25,000 rejected claims. A cancelled flight is rarely resolved quickly.
What Wizz Air does well
- Direct routes you won't find elsewhere from France: Belgrade, Yerevan, Podgorica, Tuzla or Skopje from Paris Beauvais.
- A 40 x 30 x 20 cm bag of up to 10 kg included for everyone, one of the most generous free allowances in the ultra-low-cost sector.
- Very low headline fares: the Beauvais to Yerevan route was launched at €66 one way in October 2025.
- Clearly improving punctuality: OAG ranked it the world's most punctual low-cost airline in May 2026, with 87.8% of flights on time.
What often catches people out
- Almost systematic size checks at the gate: a bag exceeding the permitted dimensions goes in the hold for around €65.
- Check-in at the desk costs €40 to €50 per passenger if not done online, where it is free but closes 3 hours before the flight.
- Customer service regularly at the bottom of the rankings: last in the Which? 2025 league table with 59% satisfaction, behind Ryanair.
- In 2023, the British aviation regulator (CAA) forced it to re-examine 25,000 claims rejected after disruption, and around £12 million was paid back: don't count on compensation arriving spontaneously.
🕐 PunctualityAccording to the AirHelp Score, 77% of Wizz Air flights arrived on time between October 2024 and September 2025; OAG nevertheless ranked it the world's most punctual low-cost airline in May 2026, with 87.8% of flights on time.
Frequently asked questions
When does Wizz Air online check-in open?
30 days before departure if you bought a seat when booking. Without a purchased seat, check-in opens only 24 hours before departure.
When does Wizz Air check-in close?
3 hours before the scheduled departure time.
How much does check-in at the airport desk cost with Wizz Air?
€40 to €50 per flight and per passenger at the desk. The same service costs €13 if bought in advance on wizzair.com. In Agadir and Zaragoza, where online check-in is not available, airport check-in is free.
Can I add my cabin case at the last minute?
Yes, but at a high price: the WIZZ Priority option costs around €55 at the airport versus €10 to €60 online depending on the route, and a bag rejected at the gate sizer goes in the hold for around €65. It all comes down to what you do before reaching the terminal.
What should I do if my Wizz Air flight is cancelled?
European regulation EU261 applies: rebooking or refund, care, and compensation if the cancellation is the airline's responsibility. Keep all your receipts and challenge any refusal: in 2023, the British regulator had 25,000 rejected claims reopened, whether they had been rejected rightly or wrongly.
