KLM check-in: when and how to check in online

The rules below are checked against the official website. Checking in with KLM is always free: nobody needs to pay a service to do it, let alone a subscription.

Opens30 hours before departure, on the website, in the app or at a self-service kiosk at the airport; only 24 hours for flights to or from the United States.
ClosesNo single published time for online check-in. At the desk, at most airports, check-in closes 40 minutes before a European flight and 60 minutes before an intercontinental flight, earlier at some airports (120 minutes in Accra, Lagos and Paramaribo, 90 in Georgetown, 75 in Nairobi, 70 in Bonaire and Guayaquil).
On mobileYes: after check-in, the digital boarding pass arrives automatically in the KLM app, in My Trip, by email or as a private message on Messenger or WhatsApp, and can be added to Apple Wallet. You can also print it at home or collect it at a kiosk or at the desk.
⚠️ The KLM trap: If KLM still needs to check your passport or visa, online check-in only gives you a check-in confirmation, not a boarding pass: you then have to collect it at the desk, which closes 40 minutes before a European flight and 60 minutes before a long-haul flight. The desk is also unavoidable if you are travelling with an animal or an unaccompanied minor, or if you have requested assistance. And on a flight operated by a partner airline other than KLM or Air France, checking in on the KLM website may not be possible.

Who is KLM?

Founded on 7 October 1919, KLM is the oldest airline in the world still flying under its original name. Since 2004 it has formed the Air France-KLM group with Air France, sharing the Flying Blue programme, and it co-founded the SkyTeam alliance. Its entire network radiates from Amsterdam-Schiphol: 164 destinations in summer 2026, including 96 in Europe and 68 on other continents, and 34.5 million passengers carried by the KLM group in 2025.

In France, KLM flies to Amsterdam from Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nantes and Montpellier. The pattern is simple: a short flight to Schiphol, then a connection to Asia, Africa or the Americas. On board, it remains generous: a free snack and drink even on the shortest flights, a sandwich on longer European routes, and on long-haul a hot dish, a large salad and a dessert.

KLM is a good choice for flying long-haul from French regional cities without going through Paris, for those travelling with hand luggage (12 kg from the Light ticket upwards) and for Flying Blue members. It is less so if you want a direct flight: outside Amsterdam, every journey involves a stopover. Small budgets should read the conditions closely: neither the Basic nor the Light ticket includes a checked bag, and on some European routes Basic even removes the hand luggage.

What KLM does well

  • Check-in opens 30 hours before departure, online, in the app or at a self-service kiosk, and the boarding pass can even arrive by WhatsApp or Messenger.
  • Even on the shortest European flights, a free snack and drink are still served in Economy; on long-haul, the meal includes a choice of hot dish, a large salad and a dessert.
  • A network of 164 destinations in summer 2026 from Amsterdam, including 68 outside Europe, reachable from Paris and seven major French regional cities.
  • An AirHelp Score 2025 of 7.39/10, placing KLM 20th out of 117 airlines, boosted by a score of 8.3/10 from passengers.

What often catches people out

  • Ground staff went on strike three times in September 2025 at Schiphol: more than 100 flights cancelled on 10 September (around 27,000 passengers affected), then 119 during a six-hour walkout two weeks later.
  • KLM does not publish a single deadline for online check-in, and its own FAQ contradicts itself on when long-haul desks close (60 minutes in one answer, 120 in another): aim for the 3 hours in advance it recommends.
  • Outside Amsterdam, every trip involves a connection at Schiphol: a delay on the first flight knocks on to the rest, and according to AirHelp, 3 out of 10 KLM flights arrive more than 15 minutes late.
  • On a full flight, KLM may ask you to put hand luggage in the hold even though it complies (free of charge): keep medicines and valuables in your small bag.
🎒 Cabin baggageFrom the Light ticket upwards, you take a small 40 x 30 x 15 cm bag under the seat and a 55 x 35 x 25 cm piece of hand luggage, wheels and handles included, for 12 kg in total (18 kg in Business Class). On some European routes, the Basic ticket keeps only the small bag: hand luggage can then be bought as an extra up to 4 hours before departure, at a price that varies by destination. Two traps: a bag that is too big or too heavy has to be checked in for an extra fee, and on a full flight, even a compliant bag may go in the hold.

🕐 Punctuality70% of KLM flights arrived on time (less than 15 minutes late) between October 2024 and September 2025, according to the AirHelp Score 2025, which ranks the airline 20th out of 117 (7.39/10 overall, 8.3/10 for passenger opinions, 6.8/10 for claims handling).
