Who is Iberia?
Iberia is Spain's elder statesman: founded in 1927, it is the traditional airline of the IAG group alongside British Airways and Vueling, a member of the oneworld alliance, with a single hub at Madrid Barajas, Terminal T4. In France, its gateway is the Paris Orly to Madrid route, from which it feeds the whole of Spain and above all Latin America, a market where it is a historic leader, notably to Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Argentina.
Flying Iberia still feels like flying a traditional airline: a proper 56 x 40 x 25 cm cabin bag included on all fares on top of an under-seat accessory, check-in with no hidden fees, and punctuality among the best in the world. On European flights, comfort is plain and the cabin dense, but you escape the ultra-low-cost hunt for extras. The Iberia Plus programme earns Avios, which can also be used with British Airways.
It is the right choice for Latin America: a single connection in Madrid, on a single ticket, with bags checked through to your destination and rebooking covered if you miss a flight. It is also a safe bet if you want to arrive on time. On a simple return trip to Spain, however, its basic fares compare with low-cost ones but include no checked bag: read the fare table closely before deciding it's a bargain.
What Iberia does well
- Fourth most punctual airline in Europe and in the world top 10 in 2025, with 83.52% of flights on time out of 188,447 flights (Cirium); its subsidiary Iberia Express ranks first in Europe with 88.94%.
- A 56 x 40 x 25 cm, 10 kg cabin bag included for everyone, plus a 40 x 30 x 15 cm accessory: one of the most generous cabin allowances in Europe.
- The Madrid T4 hub offers protected connections on a single ticket to Latin America, with bags tracked through to your destination.
- Membership of oneworld and the IAG group: Avios to collect, codeshares and rebooking options in case of disruption.
What often catches people out
- The Basic fare includes no checked bag: adding a case afterwards wipes out the price gap with the higher fares and with competing traditional airlines.
- Seat selection is paid in economy on the cheapest fares, including to make sure you sit together.
- Connecting in Madrid T4 often means going through the T4S satellite, with a shuttle and checks: a short connection turns into a sprint through a huge terminal.
🕐 PunctualityIn 2025, 83.52% of Iberia flights arrived on time out of 188,447 flights operated, placing it in the world top 10 and fourth in Europe in the Cirium ranking.
Frequently asked questions
When does Iberia online check-in open?
From ticket purchase for Iberia Group domestic and Schengen flights if your fare includes seat selection, otherwise 24 hours before departure. For flights outside the Schengen Area, only 24 hours before departure.
When does Iberia check-in close?
1 hour before scheduled departure (90 minutes for Lagos and San José, 180 minutes for Caracas).
What exactly does Iberia's Basic fare include?
The 56 x 40 x 25 cm cabin bag and the under-seat accessory are included, as on all fares. However, no checked bag is included: if you are travelling with a case, compare straight away with the next fare up, often better value than adding it separately.
Will my bags go all the way to Latin America?
Yes, on a single ticket with a connection in Madrid, they are checked through to your final destination. And if the first flight is late, Iberia must rebook you on the next flight free of charge: that is the whole point of a single ticket compared with two separate bookings.
Do I have to check in online?
No. Online check-in is convenient and free, but Iberia also checks passengers in at the airport without charging for it, unlike low-cost airlines. Just plan to arrive earlier at peak times at Orly or Madrid.
