Austin

The capital of Texas, a university town turned tech hub, proclaims itself the live music capital of the world: every night, dozens of stages play blues, country and rock between Red River and South Congress. By day, you swim in a 20°C spring in the middle of a park, queue for smoked beef brisket and, in summer, watch a million and a half bats pour out from under a bridge at sunset.

Humid subtropical bordering on semi-arid: very hot, sunny summers, often above 35°C from June to September, mild winters around 17°C by day with a few frosts, and violent thunderstorms and flash floods in spring and autumn. The best time to visit Austin is March, April, May, October and November, with temperatures reaching 35-36°C (July). By contrast, January, February, June, July, August, September and December are generally less favourable (less pleasant weather or big crowds, depending on the destination), though a trip is still possible with a bit of planning. In high season, book early: prices and visitor numbers climb fast.

Go against the flow. To avoid the crowds without sacrificing too much on the weather, aim for February, June, September and December: the crowds thin out, prices drop too, and the climate stays pleasant.

Why go to Austin?

Austin was long the exception in Texas: a modest state capital, a big university, a city of musicians and students that made “Keep Austin Weird” its unofficial motto. In twenty years it has become one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, with tech headquarters and factories and nearly a million inhabitants, and its skyline of glass towers has sprung up by the lake. The spirit lives on in the neighbourhoods, the cafés, the vintage shops and the music venues.

Music is the main reason to come. Austin has hundreds of places where bands play live, from honky-tonk to punk, hosts South by Southwest every March and the Austin City Limits festival in October, and the television show of the same name, the longest-running music programme in the United States, is still filmed here. Catching a band in a bar on a Tuesday night without having planned it is the most Austin experience there is.

The rest comes down to the outdoors and the food. Lady Bird Lake, with its trails and kayaks, runs through downtown, the Barton Springs spring lets you swim at 20°C in the middle of the city, and the limestone hills of the Hill Country begin to the west, with their rivers, vineyards and dance halls. As for food, Austin is one of the capitals of Texas barbecue and the city of the breakfast taco, served from hundreds of trucks and counters.

Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including at food trucks and on the bus, but a few small clubs prefer cash at the door. Prices are shown before tax: 8.25% on purchases and meals, and about 17% on hotel rooms with state and city taxes. A tip of 18 to 20% is expected in restaurants and $1-2 per drink at the bar.

Safety in Austin: should you be worried?

Austin is a safe city for visitors in the busy areas, downtown, South Congress, the campus and East Austin, with the usual precautions. Sixth Street, awash with alcohol on weekend nights, sees fights and pickpocketing: keep your belongings on you and go home by ride-hailing. Poverty is visible around the I-35 motorway and in some parts of downtown. Thefts from cars are common, so leave nothing visible. The real danger is the weather: summer often exceeds 35°C, so drink plenty and swim at Barton Springs rather than walking at midday; in spring and autumn, storms cause flash floods in the region, one of the most exposed in the country, so never cross a flooded road. Insurance covering medical care in the United States is essential.

Downtown and the Capitol

Downtown stretches from Lady Bird Lake to the Capitol along Congress Avenue, between glass towers, old hotels such as the Driskill, from 1886, and the bar district of Sixth Street. The Capitol and its grounds can be visited for free, and the Bullock Texas State History Museum tells the story of Texas two blocks to the north. Rainey Street, to the south-east, lines up wooden bungalows turned into bars with terraces, very busy in the evening.

Lady Bird Lake and Zilker Park

The reservoir that crosses the city is ringed by a 16 km walking and cycling loop, the busiest in Austin, and can be explored by kayak or paddleboard hired on its banks. To the south-west, Zilker Park brings together Barton Springs Pool, a botanical garden, a small train and the vast lawns where the Austin City Limits festival is held. The Congress Avenue bridge and its bats mark the eastern end of the area.

South Congress and South Austin

Across the lake, South Congress lines up shops, food trucks, music venues and motels from the 1930s turned into trendy hotels, with the best view of the Capitol. Further west, South Lamar and South First concentrate restaurants, honky-tonks and neighbourhood cafés, with a more local feel. It is the most pleasant area to stay if you want to go out on foot in the evening.

The campus and the north

North of the Capitol, the University of Texas occupies a vast campus dominated by the clock tower, with the Blanton Museum of Art, Ellsworth Kelly's Austin chapel, the Lyndon B. Johnson presidential library and the 100,000-seat football stadium. Further north, the Hyde Park neighbourhood keeps its wooden houses, and Mount Bonnell, to the west, offers the finest view over Lake Austin.

East Austin

East of the I-35 motorway, the old working-class and Mexican-American neighbourhood has become the city's most creative area in fifteen years, with its artists' studios, craft breweries, cocktail bars and the most famous queues in Texas barbecue. Murals and old family taquerias sit next to chef-led restaurants. The neighbourhood is changing fast, and so are its prices.

The Hill Country to the west

West of Austin, the limestone hills of the Hill Country can be explored by car over one or two days: Lockhart, 45 minutes to the south-east, calls itself the barbecue capital of Texas; Fredericksburg, 1 h 40 away, a town founded by German settlers, is surrounded by vineyards; Enchanted Rock, a dome of pink granite, can be climbed in an hour. In spring, the roadsides are covered in bluebonnets, the state flower.

How many days, and which itinerary in Austin?

Three days cover the Capitol, the museums, Barton Springs, South Congress, the bats and two evenings of live music. Five days let you add a day in the Hill Country and a day on the lake. Austin pairs naturally with San Antonio, 1 h 30 to the south.

The long weekend (3 days)

Day 1: guided tour of the Capitol in the morning, the Blanton Museum of Art and Ellsworth Kelly's Austin chapel, a taco lunch, then South Congress on foot in the late afternoon and the bats of the bridge at sunset. Day 2: Barton Springs Pool in the morning, kayaking on Lady Bird Lake, Texas barbecue in East Austin, and an evening of live music in Red River. Day 3: LBJ Presidential Library, Mount Bonnell for sunset, dinner and music in South Austin.

Austin and the Hill Country (5 days)

The three days of the weekend, then a day to the south-east for barbecue in Lockhart and the small town of Gruene and its 1878 dance hall, and a day to the west: Fredericksburg, its vineyards and its museum of the Pacific War, with the climb up Enchanted Rock on the way back. Book entry to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area in advance, as it is often full at weekends.

Austin and San Antonio (7 days)

Four days in Austin with a day in the Hill Country, then the drive south on the I-35 motorway, 1 h 30: three days in San Antonio for the Alamo, the River Walk, the Spanish missions by bike and the Pearl district. Fly home from San Antonio or Austin, with a connection, or drive three hours to Houston for a direct flight to Europe.

How to get to Austin and get around?

No regular direct flight links Europe to Austin: expect a connection, in Atlanta, London or Frankfurt, for 12 to 15 hours of travel. Another option is a direct flight to Houston, then a 2 h 30 to 3-hour drive. Austin-Bergstrom airport is 14 km south-east of downtown, 20 to 30 minutes by car or on CapMetro bus 20.

Downtown, South Congress, Red River and the campus can be covered on foot, and the Lady Bird Lake trails by bike. The CapMetro bus network costs $1.25, about €1, per ride and $2.50, about €2, per day, with contactless payment. MetroBike shared bikes, most of them electric, have docks all over downtown.

Ride-hailing is the simplest solution in the evening. A car becomes useful for Mount Bonnell, the Hill Country, Lockhart and San Antonio; expect €45-80 a day for a hire car. Downtown hotels charge $35-55 a night for parking.

The I-35 motorway, which cuts through the city from north to south, is one of the most congested in Texas at rush hour. Use MoPac or SH-130 to get around downtown, and set off early for San Antonio.

Where to stay in Austin?

Downtown concentrates the big hotels, from chains to luxury addresses by the lake, from €180 to €400 a night, within walking distance of Red River, Sixth Street and the Capitol. Prices rise sharply during South by Southwest in March, the Austin City Limits festival in October, the Formula 1 Grand Prix and college football games.

South Congress and South Austin have the most sought-after hotels, renovated motels from the 1930s and 1950s, boutique hotels and small charming places, from €200 to €450 a night, among the shops, food trucks and music venues.

Near the campus and in East Austin, a few recent and more affordable hotels, from €130 to €220 a night, suit a stay getting around by bike or ride-hailing. The northern districts around the motorway concentrate chain hotels at €90-140 a night, with free parking, but you need a car.

Austin is one of the most expensive cities in Texas for accommodation. Book several months ahead for the big festivals, and compare with San Antonio, 1 h 30 away, if prices soar.

What to eat in Austin?

Texas barbecue is an institution: beef brisket smoked for twelve to fifteen hours over oak, ribs and sausages, served by weight on butcher paper with pickles, onions and white bread. The most famous places involve a one- to three-hour queue at weekends; expect $25-40, about €22-34, per person.

The breakfast taco is the local speciality: a warm flour tortilla filled with eggs, bacon, chorizo, potatoes or beans, with green salsa, for $3-5 each, served from 6 a.m. in trucks and neighbourhood counters. Queso, a spicy melted cheese, comes with every Tex-Mex meal.

Food trucks are everywhere, often grouped in small parks with tables and bars, offering Thai, Vietnamese and Mexican food or burgers for $12-18. East Austin and South Austin concentrate the chef-led restaurants and cocktail bars.

Craft breweries and open-air bars, with terraces, games and live music, are the most common places to go out. A tip of 18 to 20% is expected in restaurants, $1-2 per drink at the bar. Tap water is safe to drink.

Which kind of traveller is it for?

Austin lends itself to a festive, foodie and cultural trip. Whether you travel with friends, as a couple or even with family, everyone finds their own pace. For accommodation, you will mostly find classic hotels and boutique hotels.

UK, Australian and most EU passports need an ESTA, applied for online before departure, for stays of up to 90 days; a few EU countries sit outside the Visa Waiver Program and need a full visa. Canadians need neither, only a passport. Anyone who has been to Cuba since January 2021 cannot use an ESTA and must apply for a visa.

Rules change: before you leave, check your country's official travel advice.

Once there, to stay online without paying roaming charges, an Austin eSIM activates in a few minutes and works as soon as you land (plans from €3.99). Remember suitable travel insurance too.
