Best time to travel in Milwaukee?
→ The detailed month-by-month page, with 2015-2024 averages
Best time: June to September
Best avoided if possible: November to April (less pleasant weather or big crowds).
Temperatures and rainfall: 1991-2020 normals from the Milwaukee Mitchell Airport station, NOAA data (public domain).
Humid continental, softened by Lake Michigan: pleasant summers around 27°C with a cool breeze by the water, and long, cold winters, below freezing by day in January, with about 1.2 m of snow a year. The best time to visit Milwaukee is June, July, August and September, with temperatures reaching 26-27°C (July). By contrast, January, February, March, April, May, October, November and December are generally less favourable (less pleasant weather or big crowds, depending on the destination), though a trip is still possible with a bit of planning. In high season, book early: prices and visitor numbers climb fast.
Go against the flow. To avoid the crowds without sacrificing too much on the weather, aim for May and October: the crowds thin out, prices drop too, and the climate stays pleasant.

Why go to Milwaukee?
Milwaukee was built on beer. The German immigrants of the 19th century founded Pabst, Schlitz, Blatz and Miller here, which made the city the brewing capital of the country, and the TV series Happy Days, set here, fixed in the American memory a working-class city, solid and cheerful. What remains are breweries turned into hotels and lofts, neighbourhood taverns, a brewer's mansion, and some twenty craft breweries that have taken up the torch.
The city has also learned to turn towards its lake. Santiago Calatrava's pavilion at the Milwaukee Art Museum, with its wings that beat above the water, has become its emblem, the Lake Michigan shore lines up parks, cycle paths and Bradford Beach, and the river walk runs through the centre to the Third Ward, a former warehouse district that has become the most pleasant part of the city. The Harley-Davidson Museum is a reminder that one of America's most famous brands was born here, in 1903.
Finally, Milwaukee is a city of summer festivals. Summerfest, in late June and early July, brings together hundreds of concerts on the lakeshore, followed every weekend by German, Irish, Polish and Mexican ethnic festivals. Smaller and cheaper than Chicago, 1 hour 30 minutes away by train, it is easy to add to a stay in its big neighbour or to a road trip into northern Wisconsin.

Safety in Milwaukee: should you be worried?
Downtown, the Third Ward, the East Side, Walker's Point and the lakefront are easy to walk around by day and in the evening. As in other big Midwestern cities, some neighbourhoods in the north and west of the city have a high crime rate; they hold no interest for tourists. Car break-ins do happen, so leave nothing visible. On the shores of Lake Michigan, the water stays cool even in summer and rip currents can be dangerous in strong winds: respect the flags and the instructions posted on the beaches. Winter is long and harsh, with icy winds off the lake from December to March. Health insurance covering the United States is essential.

The centre stretches between the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan, around Wisconsin Avenue and the Flemish-style City Hall of 1895. To the east, the Milwaukee Art Museum and its white wings, the War Memorial and Discovery World, a museum of science and the lake, line the water. Lakeshore State Park, a peninsula of prairie, extends the promenade southwards. The Hop streetcar links downtown, the Third Ward and the station.
Historic Third Ward

South of downtown, the former warehouse district, rebuilt in brick after the fire of 1892, is home to galleries, designer boutiques, restaurants and the Milwaukee Public Market. The RiverWalk follows its quays, and Henry Maier Festival Park, where Summerfest is held, stretches to the east. It is the best base for a stay on foot.
East Side, Brady Street and Lake Park

North-east of downtown, Brady Street is a street of bars, cafés and restaurants with the feel of a bohemian Italian neighbourhood. Further north, Lake Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, overlooks Bradford Beach and the North Point lighthouse. Villa Terrace, an Italian-style house from 1923 with terraced gardens above the lake, is worth a stop on the way.
Menomonee Valley and Walker's Point
South-west of downtown, the former industrial valley of the Menomonee River is home to the Harley-Davidson Museum and the Brewers' stadium. Walker's Point, right next door, is the district of chef-led restaurants, cocktail bars and the Hispanic community, with Mitchell Street. The Basilica of St. Josaphat, built in 1901 by Polish parishioners with the stones of a former Chicago post office, raises its dome further south.
Brewery District and Westown

West of downtown, the former Pabst brewery, closed in 1996, has been converted into a district of lofts, bars and a hotel set in the brewhouse. The Pabst Mansion is a few blocks away on Wisconsin Avenue, alongside the Marquette University campus. The Bucks' Fiserv Forum and the Deer District, further north, come alive on game nights.
Day trips: Chicago, Cedarburg and Wisconsin

Chicago is 1 hour 30 minutes away on the Hiawatha train, with six return services a day on weekdays. To the north, Cedarburg keeps its stone mills and shops 30 minutes away, and the forests and glacial lakes of Kettle Moraine begin 45 minutes away. Door County, a peninsula of orchards, lighthouses and fishing villages on Lake Michigan, takes three hours by road and two days.
How many days, and which itinerary in Milwaukee?
Two days are enough for the art museum, the Third Ward, the RiverWalk and a brewery. Three or four days add the Harley-Davidson Museum, the Pabst Mansion and Bradford Beach. In summer, allow an extra day for a lakeside festival.

How to get to Milwaukee and get around?
There are no direct flights from Europe to Milwaukee: expect a connection in Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Atlanta or New York, for a journey of 10 hours 30 minutes to 13 hours. Mitchell Airport is 13 km south of downtown, 15 minutes by taxi for $25-35, about €22-30, and has its own station on the railway line to Chicago.
Another option is to fly into Chicago, which has non-stop flights from Europe, then take the Amtrak Hiawatha train from Union Station, about 1 hour 30 minutes to Milwaukee's Intermodal Station, with six return services a day from Monday to Saturday and five on Sundays.
In town, The Hop streetcar links the station, the Third Ward, downtown and the lakefront, and MCTS buses serve the rest of the metropolitan area. Bublr bike-share bikes let you follow the RiverWalk and the lakefront path on flat ground.
Downtown, the Third Ward, the art museum and the RiverWalk can be done on foot. A car becomes useful for the Harley-Davidson Museum, the Lakefront Brewery and the Pabst Mansion if you want to fit them all in, and necessary for Cedarburg, Kettle Moraine and Door County. Downtown hotels charge $25-40, about €22-34, a night for parking.
Where to stay in Milwaukee?
The Third Ward and downtown are the most convenient areas, within walking distance of the RiverWalk, the art museum and the Public Market: expect €130-220 a night, considerably more during Summerfest and on big summer weekends.
Several hotels have character: a grand Victorian hotel from 1893 with painted ceilings, an Art Deco hotel, a hotel set in the Pabst brewhouse, and another in a 1907 warehouse designed with bikers in mind, a stone's throw from the Harley-Davidson Museum.
The East Side, around Brady Street and the university, has a few quieter places near the lake and the beaches, 10 minutes from downtown by bus or bike.
With a car, chain hotels at the airport and near the motorways cost €90-130 a night, parking included, and the airport has its own station for getting to Chicago.

Cheese curds, pieces of fresh cheddar breaded and fried, grilled bratwurst and rye bread recall the German heritage, and frozen custard, a very creamy ice cream, is eaten in summer at stands that have been around for decades.
