Why go to Lençóis Maranhenses?
In north-east Brazil, in the state of Maranhão, there is a landscape that contradicts the very idea of a desert. Across nearly a thousand square kilometres, white sand dunes stretch as far as the eye can see, sculpted by the wind into perfect waves. Yet between these pale crests lie thousands of freshwater lagoons, turquoise and warm, fed not by springs but by rain. The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park takes its name from this image: seen from the air, the whole expanse looks like crumpled bedsheets, the lençóis of the Portuguese name. You walk barefoot on immaculate sand, dive into crystal-clear water and can hardly believe that the Atlantic Ocean borders all this just a few kilometres away.
The secret of this place lies in a calendar. From January to May, the rainy season soaks the sand and fills the hollows between the dunes. Then comes the dry season and, for a few months, roughly from June to September, the lagoons reach their most spectacular level before evaporation gradually empties them. Come outside this window and you risk finding dried-up or half-filled basins. It is this constraint that makes the place so special: you don't visit the Lençóis when you want, but when nature decides, and that rarity is part of its charm.
Around the park, life keeps a slow pace. The fishing villages move at the speed of the donkeys carrying loads through the sand, the boats heading up the Preguiças river and the tides that dictate comings and goings. Barreirinhas is the main base, Atins plays on isolation and kitesurfing, and everywhere you find the feeling of a far-flung corner still spared from mass tourism. You come here to walk, swim, watch the sand change colour through the day and rediscover an understated Brazil, far from crowded beaches and big cities.

How much does a trip to Lençóis Maranhenses cost?
Maranhão remains an affordable destination, but the park's isolation and the obligatory use of 4x4s and boats push up the cost of excursions. Here are three indicative profiles for a day on site, excluding long-distance transport and accommodation.
| Style | Per day | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Backpacker | BRL 150-250 (around €25-40) | Simple hostel in Barreirinhas, shared 4x4 excursion to a lagoon, meals in local eateries and transport by shared van. |
| Comfort | BRL 350-550 (around €55-90) | Pleasant pousada with breakfast, small-group excursions, a boat trip down the Preguiças river and fish restaurants by the water. |
| Premium | BRL 800 and up (around €130 and up) | Charming pousada in Atins, private 4x4, scenic flight over the park in a light aircraft and refined feet-in-the-sand dining. |
The currency is the Brazilian real (BRL). Paying by card is easy in Barreirinhas and in the pousadas, but Atins and the small villages often run on cash, as do the guides and local excursions. ATMs are rare and sometimes temperamental in the region, so bring enough cash before leaving São Luís or the centre of Barreirinhas.
Is Lençóis Maranhenses safe?
The Lençóis Maranhenses are among the most peaceful regions in Brazil, and the villages of Barreirinhas and Atins can be explored without any particular worry, including in the evening. The main risks are natural: the sun beats down hard on the reflective white sand, there is no shade in the dunes, and the lagoon water, although fresh, calls for caution from less confident swimmers. So bring a hat, sunscreen, plenty of water and good footwear for the sand, which burns during the day. It is strongly advised to venture into the park only with a local guide or driver, as it is easy to get lost in this vast expanse without landmarks, and distances are deceptive.

The dunes and turquoise lagoons

This is the image that sums up the whole park and stays with you long after you leave. Dunes of an almost unreal white ripple to the horizon, and in every hollow lies a lagoon of deep turquoise. The light changes throughout the day, shifting from the bright blue of midday to the golden glints of late afternoon. You walk from one pool to the next, climbing the crests barefoot in fine, cool sand. Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita are among the largest and most photographed. The silence, broken only by the wind, adds to the sense of unreality.
By 4x4 from Barreirinhas

Barreirinhas is the busiest gateway to the park and the starting point for most excursions. Here you climb into a sturdy 4x4, the only vehicle able to tackle the sand tracks and ford the streams that lead to the dunes. The bumpy, dusty ride is already part of the adventure and takes about an hour to reach the first lagoons. The classic circuits serve Lagoa Azul or Lagoa Bonita, with a stop long enough to swim and enjoy the sunset. You usually book the day before with a local agency, and departures are in small groups. It is the simplest way to discover the park in half a day.
Swimming among the dunes

Swimming here is a rare, almost intimate experience. The lagoon water is fresh, warm and perfectly transparent, heated by the sun in shallow pools. You wade in gently, firm sand underfoot, with no rocks or seaweed, in a setting where the dunes are the only backdrop. Some lagoons reach a good depth at the height of the season and invite you to swim, while others remain basins to laze in. The absence of fish or currents makes swimming completely peaceful. This is the moment when you truly understand why this desert draws travellers from all over the world.
The village of Atins

Set at the mouth of the Preguiças river, Atins is a small fishing village that has become a haunt for travellers seeking peace and quiet. It is reached by boat or by 4x4 after a drive through the sand, which deters hurried tourism. The streets are unpaved, donkeys cross paths with kitesurfers, and the atmosphere remains resolutely bohemian and relaxed. It is also an ideal base for reaching Lagoa da Esperança and other less-visited lagoons, on foot or by vehicle. Steady winds make it a renowned kitesurfing spot for part of the year. You now find pretty pousadas and a few good restaurants here, without the place losing its raw charm.
Sunset over the sand

At the end of the day, the Lençóis put on a show that excursions almost always build into their schedule. The sun sinks slowly and the white sand turns orange, pink and then mauve, while the lagoons reflect the sky like mirrors. You climb to the top of a dune to take in the whole expanse of the park, drink in hand on some tours, camera in hand for everyone. Shadows lengthen, the crests stand out sharply and the silence grows denser still. It is often the last stop before heading back to Barreirinhas in the fading light. A simple, suspended moment that is hard to forget.
How many days, and which itinerary?
In two to three days you can discover the best of the park from Barreirinhas, with one or two 4x4 outings to the big lagoons and a trip down the Preguiças river. To take your time, stay in Atins and continue with the crossing to Jericoacoara, allow four to five days instead.

2 to 3 days
Set up base in Barreirinhas and spend the first afternoon at Lagoa Bonita or Lagoa Azul by 4x4, with a swim and sunset over the dunes. The next day, take a boat down the Preguiças river to Vassouras, Mandacaru and its lighthouse, then the beach at Caburé. A third day lets you add a second outing to more distant lagoons or a scenic flight to grasp the vastness of the park from the air.
4 to 5 days
Start with two days in Barreirinhas for the big lagoons and the Preguiças river, then move to Atins for two nights, time enough to savour the village atmosphere, Lagoa da Esperança and long walks in the dunes. Wind lovers can make the most of the kitesurfing spots. From Atins or Barreirinhas, you can continue with the 4x4 and boat crossing to Jericoacoara, in the neighbouring state of Ceará, to extend the trip along the coast.
Getting there and getting around
Access is most often by plane to São Luís, the capital of Maranhão, from where Barreirinhas is about four hours away by road, by scheduled bus or shared van. A small airport at Barreirinhas also handles a few flights and the light aircraft used for scenic flights. Once there, a private car is useless in the sand: everything is done by 4x4 with a driver, booked through local agencies, and by boat on the Preguiças river. Excursions to the lagoons leave in groups at set times, timed for the morning or late-afternoon light.
For Atins, you generally leave Barreirinhas by 4x4 and then boat, or take the sand road, a journey of about two hours depending on conditions. The village is so small you can cover it on foot, and trips to the surrounding lagoons are on foot, by bike or in an off-road vehicle. The legendary crossing to Jericoacoara, very popular with backpackers, combines 4x4, ferries and coastal tracks over a long day. Book it with specialist agencies, as it requires logistics you cannot improvise alone.
Where to stay in Lençóis Maranhenses?
Barreirinhas has the widest choice of accommodation, from simple hostels for tight budgets to comfortable pousadas with pools, often set along the Preguiças river. It is the most practical option for stringing excursions together, with restaurants and agencies close at hand. Travellers looking for calm will appreciate places a little away from the centre, by the water, where you have breakfast facing the river before heading into the dunes.
Atins appeals to those who want to sleep as close as possible to nature and the village atmosphere. There are charming pousadas, some of them eco-friendly, mixing wood, hammocks and tropical gardens, along with a few more rustic options for small budgets. Prices rise in high season and during the windy periods favoured for kitesurfing. Booking ahead is strongly advised, as capacity is limited and the village fills up quickly in the dry months, when the lagoons are at their best.

What to eat in Lençóis Maranhenses?
Maranhão cooking puts fish and seafood centre stage, as you would expect in this region of rivers and ocean. You can enjoy prawns prepared in a thousand ways, grilled fish and, above all, arroz de cuxá, a local speciality of rice with a slightly sour green plant, vinagreira. It is often served with farofa and beans, in unpretentious restaurants where the plate matters more than the decor. In Barreirinhas, the tables along the Preguiças river make a pleasant setting for dinner after a day in the dunes.
In Atins, the food scene has improved in recent years, driven by the influx of travellers. There are a few good restaurants serving fresh fish, reworked Brazilian dishes and international cuisine, often in a relaxed, feet-in-the-sand atmosphere. Prices remain reasonable but are a little higher than in the towns inland, because of the isolation. Everywhere, people happily finish with a tropical fruit juice, açaí, cashew fruit or passion fruit, or an ice-cold caipirinha to go with the sunset.
